TOP SPORTSMAN AND TOP DRAGSTER JEGS ALLSTAR “BLOCKER” POSITIONS ANNOUNCED

By virtue of a special drawing, the Top Sportsman and Top Dragster “Blocker” positions for the 2010 JEGS Allstar event will go to the NHRA Pacific division and the NHRA Southeast division, respectively.  The two classes were added to the prestigious program at last year’s 25th Anniversary JEGS Allstar event with 2010 being their first year of competition.  Officials held the drawing this past weekend at the O’Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals presented by Pennzoil.

The JEGS Allstars event pits the top points earners form NHRA’s seven geographic divisions against each other in the culmination of a year-long points battle.  Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors in Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Top Sportsman, and Top Dragster vie for team and individual honors and a share of the $119,000 purse.   The defending JEGS Allstar Champion in each class is invited back as the “blocker’ and final competitor in the 8-car competition in each class.

Additionally, in an effort to guarantee full 8-car fields in all classes of JEGS Allstar competition, the blocker selection process will be expanded.  Currently the blocker position is awarded to the defending JEGS Allstar Champion and then to last year’s runner-up if the defending champion is either the current year’s division points leader (and would compete as the division’s rep) or cannot attend the competition.

Additions / changes are outlined below:

For all classes in 2010:  If for any reason the defending JEGS Allstar Champion and the runner-up cannot compete as the blocker, the blocker position will then be awarded to the No. 2 driver in points from the defending champion’s NHRA division.  If the No. 2 driver cannot attend then it will go to the No. 3 driver and so on.  Ex:  The previous year’s JEGS Allstar champion is the blocker for the following year.  If he or she is the division rep, then the previous year’s runner-up would be the blocker.  If the runner-up is their division’s rep (or cannot attend the competition) the blocker position would then go back to defending champion’s division, and to the No. 2 points finisher in that division.

For all classes beginning in 2011:  If the defending JEGS Allstar Champion cannot compete as the blocker for any reason, the blocker position will remain in the champion’s division and will go to the next highest JEGS Allstar points driver.  Ex:  If the defending JEGS Allstar Funny Car Champion is also the division allstar points leader, he or she will compete as the division rep, and the No. 2 driver in allstar funny car points in that division will go in the blocker position.
