After two days of intense qualifying action, the fields are set for the fifth annual JEGS NHRA Pacific SPORTSnationals at Auto Club Dragway.
           
In Saturday afternoon’s final qualifying session, Randy Walker of Palm Desert, Calif., drove his unique A/Pro Mod ’74 El Camino to the top spot with a run of 6.318-seconds, .732-seconds under the index. Walker’s run bumped Friday leader, John Mihovetz of Ontario, Calif., to the No. 2 spot. Defending JEGS Pacific SPORTSnationals champ Ed Sigmon is also in the field, qualified No. 18 with his ’34 Chevy roadster.
           
After qualifying and class eliminations in Super Stock, Josh Edwards of Glendale, Ariz., is the leader with a 9.404 effort in his SS/GM ’92 Camaro. Edwards leads a field that also includes former national champions John Calvert, and Jimmy DeFrank as well as last year’s JEGS Pacific SPORTSnationals champ, Mark Faul.

In Stock, defending event winner Leo Glasbrenner of Chino, Calif., placed his ’68 Firebird in the top spot after running a 10.744 against his 11.70 index. Nearly 60 drivers are qualified in Stock including well-known NHRA Sportsman racers Jimmy DeFrank, Mark Faul, Bernie Cunningham, and 2007 Super Stock national champion Darren Smith.
 
Paul Gladden of Tracy, Calif., drove to the No. 1 spot in Top Dragster qualifying with a 6.593 run at over 205-mph. Gladden is one of 12 drivers to qualify in the six-second zone in the Top Dragster class. Defending event champ Tom Yancer is seeded No. 10 after running a best of 6.929.
 
The first four qualifiers in the Top Sportsman class are in the six-second zone, including Wayne Silvia of Upland, Calif., who drove his ’04 Cavalier to a 6.77 at 207.11 mph. Also among the top qualifiers is Joe Roubicek, who is one of the drivers in contention for the JEGS Crown trophy. Roubicek won the JEGS NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals in Belle Rose, La., earlier this year and can become just the second driver to claim the special JEGS Crown award should he also win this weekend’s event.
 
In the Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley-Davidson class, competitors qualify based on reaction time. Doug Schumann of Hesperia, Calif., assured himself of the top spot with a perfect .000 reaction aboard his ’04 Suzuki. As the top qualifier, Schumann will have a bye run in tomorrow’s opening round of eliminations.
 
Also on Friday, final eliminations were completed in the Top Dragster and Super Street classes from the postponed NHRA Arizona Nationals last February. Mira Silvia of Upland, Calif., claimed the Top Dragster title, the first of her career, when she stopped Tony Jardino in the final and Mike DeCarolis of Chandler, Ariz., captured the Super Street title after driving his ’72 Nova to a win over Virgil Dalluge in the final.
 
Final eliminations for the fifth annual JEGS NHRA Pacific SPORTSnationals will begin tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.
