TRAGEDY HITS NC DRAG STRIP

A drag race fan was killed and a second was seriously injured while at an event hosted by Harrells Raceway in Harrells, NC, on Sunday.

According to www.wwaytv3.com, Joseph Wactor of Brooklyn, NY, lost control of his Pro Mod-style car and impacted the guardrail. The force of the impact knocked the engine from the car. Free of the race car, the engine flew approximately 100 feet, landing on Terry McDougald, of Lillington, NC. McDougald was watching the event from behind a chain link fence and died the scene.

An unnamed spectator was injured by a burning fuel cell, which was also ejected from the car.

Wactor suffered some injuries but refused treatment.

Sampson County Sheriff's Investigators are investigating the exact cause of the crash.

Track officials believe this is the first spectator death in the history of the facility. Pro Modified racer James “Smitty” Smith was the last racer killed while racing at the facility in 1992.
