DUNNE HEADLINES NMCA MAPLE GROVE WINNERS

Joe Dunne was able to get his repeat victory at Maple Grove Raceway.

But it wasn’t easy.

“We ran into some trouble,” Dunne said. “We hurt the motor during time trials on Saturday and we stayed up until 3 in the morning to get it ready. Everything came together really well.

“The track was excellent. The guys here did a great job preparing it and it was perfect for us.”

Driving his 1968 Camaro, the Wolcott, Conn., resident repeated as Scorpion Performance Pro Street champion Sunday at the Kooks Custom Headers NMCA Muscle Car Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway.

He beat Vincent Demieri (Dix Hills, N.Y.) in the final with a pass of 6.257 seconds at 228.11 mph.
 
Overall, it was a long weekend at The Grove as the National Muscle Car Association Edelbrock Drag Racing Series returned with a large field of cars divided into 11 different classes. Members of three classes in the Sunoco Race Fuels Money Trial also had the chance to take part in a non-points race.

Other winners included Don Baskin (Covington, Tenn.) in Mean Street. He drove his ‘67 Chevy II to a win over Alan Von Ahnen (Pennsville, N.J.) with a pass of 10.047 at 130.83.
 
A repeat winner, Baskin advanced to the final by with a quicker run over David Hill (Casselberry, Fla.) in the semifinals that overcame a slightly slower reaction time.

Skip Baskin (Convington, Tenn.) then drove the same car to victory in Pro Stock, defeating Greg Delaney (Covington, Tenn.) in the final with a run of 8..586 at 154.28.
 
Baskin needed to overcome Rick Riccardi (Toms River, N.J.), who had a perfect reaction time in the semifinals. He did it by outrunning Riccardi’s ’81 Capri by .12 seconds.
Mike Fratena (Indialantic, Fla.) won Street Radial with a great reaction time of .014 that was turned into a run of 8.797 at 160.06 that beat last year’s winner Brad Schehr (Fort Myers, Fla.).
 
Fratena had a semifinal single and beat Scott Carter (Clarkston, Mich.) in the quarters by running nearly a half-second better.

Kevin Parent (Rochester Hills, Mich.) got the jump on David Beeson off the starting line with his ‘69 Nova in Pro Street and zipped to the win with a pass of 7.505 at 164.01.
 
He was beaten off the starting line in both the quarters and semis, but made up for it with superior ETs of 7.554 and 7.456, respectively.

Bill Lutz (Canal Winchester, Ohio) took Super Street again this year in his ’67 Camaro, rushing past a broken Tony Nesbitt (Lombard, Ill.) with a 6.795 at 214.66. He had an easy road to the final as both his quarterfinal and semifinal opponents fouled at the starting line.

Andy Warren (Rineyville, Ky.) and Danny Towe (Lawrenceville, Ga.) both had breakout passes in Nostalgia Muscle Car, but Warren was the winner because his pass of 10.979 at 118.59 was only .979 off his dial-in.
 
After single in the quarterfinals, Warren was just about on his dial-in in the semis, going 11.060 over 11.00 to beat Tony Miles (Tiplersville, Miss.). Warren is a repeat winner in this category.

Bobby Barrick (Danville, Ky.) grabbed the Late-Model EFI class in his ‘07 Mustang, defeating Robert Mays (Cane Ridge, Tenn.) with a pass of 14.565 at 88.01. Barrick had a slower car in all three elimination rounds, but was able to get closer to his dial-in each time, including the 14.565 over 14.50 in the final.

Jamie Stanton (Lakeport, N.Y.) had the win in Xtreme Street in an ‘02 Camaro going 8.152 at 172.89 to beat Steve Cable (Huntsville, Ala.). He advanced through the bracket with some help as he had a single in the first round and opponent Jason Lee (Maumee, Ohio) broke in the quarterfinals. In the semis, he had a race from Bill Trovato (Rochester, N.Y.) and raced past him with a run of 8.044 at 172.94.

Kurt Neighbor (Twinsburg, Ohio) had the jump off the starting line in his ‘65 Comet to take Nostalgia SS, running 9.465 at 135.24 to beat Gary Bates (Wintersville, Ohio). Qualifying second, Neighbor’s opponent in the first round, Scott Griffith (Algouguin, Ill.), broke, had a single in the second and Fred Rader (Mansfield, Ohio) fouled in the quarterfinals. Neighbor then used a holeshot to beat Douglas Poskevich (Deland, Fla.) in the semis..

Jake Winters (Washington, Mich.) took advantage of a foul by Donnie Bowles (Madisonville, Ky.) to win Open Comp. Winters survived a double-breakout in the semis against Donald Carver (Hanson, Ky.), but was closer to his dial-in..

Winning the non-points race were Skip Bechtel (Mohnton, Pa.) in Super, Martin Flegal (Ephrata, Pa.) in Pro and Nathan Beideman (Parkesburg, Pa.) in Street.
 
Bechtel advanced through the quarterfinals with a single and the semis as Randy Perdue (Oxford, Pa.) fouled. In the final against John Scott (Kinzers, Pa.), Bechtel took his dragster on a run of 7.822 at 170.47 as Scott broke out by .01.
 
Flegal won in his S-10 when finals opponent Ray Goetz (Philadelphia, Pa.) fouled. Flegal won his quarterfinal when the opponent broke out and then beat Art Hand (Salford, Pa.) in the semis with a run of 9.432 at 131.08 and a .005 reaction time.
 
Beideman, driving a Honda, took out Robert George Jr. (Palmerton, Pa.) in the final with a pass of 17.776 at 77.48 that nearly hit his 17.75 dial-in. Beideman also came close to his D/I in the semis against John Grater (Zeiglerville, Pa.) with a 17.751 over 17.75.

Racing returns next weekend with Auto Locator Grudge Racing on Friday and two rounds of the Money Trail on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
