IOWA RACERS DOMINATE NHRA DIV. 3 LODRS EVENT

Div3_NorthCentral-4cAfter a weekend of intense racing, Richard Putz and Kirk Williams took home top honors at Cordova Dragway Park for this weekend’s NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Summer Showdown presented by Matco Tools.   

Putz, from Earlville, Iowa, qualified in the second position in Top Alcohol Dragster and defeated Randy Meyer, Spring Hill, Kan., sending himself to the semi-finals to face Jared Dreher, Clinton, Ind., who qualified in 6th.  The NHRA West Central Division leader in points, Putz outran his opponent with a time of 5.571 seconds at 254.71 mph and advanced to the finals.  There he ran his best time all day, 5.537, 256.11 and defeated, Edwin Schmeeckle, 5.612, 242.10, from Gothenburg, Neb., in taking home the “Wally” trophy.

Glenwood, Iowa’s Williams started off his day in the number one qualifying spot in Top Alcohol Funny Car and defeated Wayne Butler in his ’04 Camaro with 5.751, 247.88 in the first round.  Williams met Chris Foster, Davenport, Iowa, in the semi-finals and earned his way to the finals with a time of 5.796, 245.05.  In the finals, Williams faced off against the No. 3 qualifier, Ray Drew from Hales Corner, Wis., and his ’04 Firebird.  Williams had a hole-shot win at 5.735, 249.76 against Drew’s 5.719, 251.49 efforts to complete his weekend and maintain his position as first in points.

Jeremy Demers from Carroll, Iowa, joined in on his home states winning streak in Super Comp when he defeated Kyle Lawrence, Manhattan, Kan., in his dragster at 8.901, 171.29.  Prior to the weekend, Demers was second in points.

Minnesota residents also had some luck at the track this weekend.  Donnie Durenberger, Dayton, Minn., raced his ’68 Camaro in the Super Street class past the ’68 Camaro of Jeff Landholm, Oakland, Neb., to take home the win.  In Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson, Jeff Lanoue, Zimmerman, Minn., faced off against David Cozad of Davenport, Iowa.  Lanoue’s ’06 Suzuki had a winning run of 7.954, 150.58 against Cozad’s ’73 Kawasaki.  In the Top Dragster class, Clearwater, Minnesota’s Les Feist, who was third in points, outran DeSoto, Kan., resident John Lobner to complete the state’s victories.

In Super Gas, Alan Bush’s ’77 Nova ran a 9.915, 154.25.  This was enough for the Erie, Ill., resident to win the class against Charles Siegler, Villa Park, Ill., and his ’96 Daytona.  Bryan Chaney, Claremore, Okla., took home the win against Thomas Mosbeck, Becker, Minn., in Super Stock.

Tyler Wudarczyk, Wamego, Kan., came into the weekend number one in points in Stock Eliminator and took home a win against Luke Bogacki, Carterville, Ill., with his run of 11.369, 104.08.  In Competition Eliminator, Al Ackerman went home victorious.  Ackerman, Saddle Brook, N.J., defeated Bruno Massel, Woodridge, Ill., for the Wally.  Joshua Vettel, Phillips, Neb., had the winning run in the finals for Top Sportsman against Larry Dalton to round out the weekend.
 
West Central Division racers head to Heartland Park Topeka for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, August 27-28.
