Defending U.S. Nationals champion Roger Burgess is off to a fast start in his ProCare Rx Camaro, zooming to the top of the Pro Mod qualifying charts Friday evening at Indy with a 5.926 at 244.74 mph at O'Reilly Raceway Park.

"Al (Billes, crew chief) got the tune-up right and we pretty much went straight down the track," Burgess said. "We may have left a little out there so that gives us something to shoot for the rest of the weekend. We want consistency first and foremost and we want to improve as well. I think the weather tomorrow should give everyone a chance to go quicker. If conditions get better we'll all go for it."

For the first time in history, competitors in the Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series are vying for a coveted Wally trophy at this year's event.

"Last year was a nice win for us but it didn't result in a Wally so we're hoping to get one of those this time through," said Burgess, the series organizer. "It's a big deal for all of us in Pro Mod and the competition will be tough. It's going to be fun."

Although the Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series has enjoyed a nine-week summer break, crew chief Al Billes has been staying sharp by tuning team drivers Michael Gillqvist and Melanie Troxel to record numbers at FIA tour stops in Sweden, Finland, and Germany. But he admits there's no place like home.

"The track was good and the air was good, just a lot better than what we've been seeing lately," Billes said. "We came here for Unleashed a few weeks back and it was good then, but it's even better now. The Safety Safari is second-to-none.

"We've got one car in there solidly and now we can work on improving the other two (driven by Troxel and Raymond Commisso). We'll just race the track and see what we can get away with. It's a good start and we're having some fun."
