MYERS’ DUSTER GETTING MAJOR MAKEOVER

Myers_carOne of the most highly anticipated new cars of the 2010 ADRL season will be sporting a drastically different look by the time it gets to Dragstock VII.

In March, Pro Nitrous star Thomas Myers proudly debuted a brand-new, Andy McCoy Race Cars-built ’70 Duster—the first of its kind—at the ADRL season opener in Houston. Next weekend at Rockingham Dragway, however, the classic Mopar will have a huge screw-blown Pro Extreme Hemi protruding through the hood where its scoop once stood.

Radical changes continue in the cockpit, too, as last season’s ADRL Rookie of the Year Jason Hamstra will be behind the wheel for the remainder of the 2010 schedule after crashing his ’69 Camaro a couple of months back at Topeka.

Radical changes continue in the cockpit, too, as last season’s ADRL Rookie of the Year Jason Hamstra will be behind the wheel for the remainder of the 2010 schedule after crashing his ’69 Camaro a couple of months back at Topeka.

It’s the latest blow in a very tough year for Myers that has seen him and his wife, Rebecca, struggle with DNQs and electrical gremlins in their new car and very serious structural problems with a brand-new race trailer.

“Unfortunately, Thomas missed several races because of the trailer issues and our agreement called for the car to be out there and running and since he wasn’t going to be able to be out there the rest of this year because of the trailer problems, we had an option to either sell the car or do something else with the car,” said Stan McCoy, speaking on behalf of his son’s chassis business. “When we went to St. Louis, we talked with Kevin Hamstra and he was looking for a ride (for his son, Jason), and we thought we could swap the car over to a blower, so that’s what we’re doing now.”

After receiving the car back from Myers on Wednesday morning this week, McCoy is hard at work in his Washington, Missouri, shop, thrashing to complete the job in time to enter Dragstock VII.

“On the nitrous cars the whole front fuel cell mounts are different, the shock set-ups are different, it’s got a different third-member in it, the car’s got to be completely rewired, we have to weld new components on; there’s just a whole lot of different things to be set up for it to become a blower car,” McCoy said. “It’s just going to be a real push to get this thing turned around to do Rockingham.”

Despite the obvious upheaval, the senior McCoy insists the shop’s relationship with Myers remains positive and open to working with him again in the future.

“We have no hard feelings; it was just a business agreement where we get the car out there,” McCoy said. “I think this deal with Hamstra is a win-win all the way around. Thomas was just in one of those situations where it was ‘racer’s bad luck.’ We certainly wish Thomas the best and just really needed to get the car out there and try to do the best we can for our business in the future.”

Reached at his auto repair business in Granby, Texas, Myers appeared to hold a different view of recent developments.

“No comment,” he said.

Myers did, however, reveal a plan to return to Pro Nitrous action in the ADRL World Finals this October with the ’63 Corvette he raced prior to picking up the Duster. He also thanked sponsors Safety-Kleen, Jasper Engines and Midco Demolition Tools for sticking with him and promised a return to running a full ADRL schedule next year.
