CAPPS TO RACE NAPA BRAKES DODGE IN CONCORD

Ron Capps will race the NAPA Brakes Dodge Charger Funny Car this weekend at the third annual NHRA Carolinas Nationals in Concord, N.C., the second of six capps2events making up the Countdown to the Championship playoffs of the 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.

The NAPA Brakes paint scheme will help kick off NAPA’s Great Breaks on Great Brakes promotion. Customers can receive up to a $50 mail-in rebate with purchase of qualifying NAPA Brakes products at any participating NAPA AUTO PARTS store or AutoCare Center through Sept. 30.

Capps will also be attempting to make up some ground following his first-round exit at the opening event of the playoffs at the U.S. Nationals on Labor Day weekend. Entering the Countdown in fifth place, he now stands sixth. He is in no way discouraged as he targets his first NHRA Funny Car championship.

"You want to start the Countdown on a good foot, just like you want to start the regular season in Pomona (Calif.) by going at least a few rounds and just getting a good start and staying in the hunt," said Capps.

"We didn't do that. Unfortunately, we went out first round, so we were a little behind going in once the points reset. Like I've said before, the good thing is we know we have a good race car, and when it's considered an upset to get beat first round we take it as a compliment.

"Our NAPA team went back to the Don Schumacher Racing shop in Brownsburg, Ind., and had a little bit of homework done on a few things that we figured out with the chassis and we think it's really going to help us. The NAPA Dodge is running well; we're just looking for the consistency.

“The common denominator we heard from the crew chiefs and drivers at the end of in Indy as they prepared for Concord was how good the Concord track is going to be. It's a track where the crew chiefs can take the variables and cross them of their list.

"And when you get to a track where the crew chief says that there's no part of the track he has to worry about slowing the car down to get through a tough spot or the driver has to be careful of a certain bump or a critical part of the track, is encouraging. The Concord facility is one of the smoothest tracks we go to. In the Friday night session there’s a good chance the fans could see the teams lower the national record. It's that good of a track.

"On top of that, we're running the special NAPA Brakes body on the car. Everybody has heard me talk about how good you want to run with a special paint scheme. NAPA Brakes is running this program for the entire month of September. For me, it's neat to give back to the NAPA customers. Even more so, for the people associated with the NAPA Brakes division, this is their time to shine. And when I see NAPA Brakes on the side of a DSR car at a big race like this, it makes me puff my chest out a little bit more because I want to give them a good result and go back to corporate and hand the NAPA Brakes people a Wally (event trophy) on Monday.

"With this weekend followed by the Dallas event the next weekend, things are going to happen fast, but right now our focus is the race at Concord and getting back up in the points."
