HALSEY’S GAME OF INCHES AND SECONDS

15_jim_halsey_actionADRL Pro Nitrous racer Jim Halsey understands drag racing is measured in tiny increments of time.

During the semi-final round of last month’s ADRL Battle for the Belts competition, the championship-determining competition at the LenMar Motorsports World Finals, .001 of a second might have well been ten minutes. That miniscule measurement of time ended his 2010 season as he ended up on the wrong side of the green light against fellow nitrous titan Shannon Jenkins.

Earlier in the day, Halsey, the first nitrous driver into the five second zone, jumped to the top of the qualifying list for the 2011 season with the quickest run in qualifying, a 3.896 at 194.18.

The ADRL’s unique championship format crowns the series champions on Friday all the while qualifying for the first event of the following season on Saturday. The first race of the next season is completed on Saturday.

“I don’t know if that was a statement run as much as it was just wanting to go down the track,” Halsey admitted. “We’ve struggled for quite a few races this season. Hopefully we found our problems with that run.”

Saturday’s opening race for 2010 was rained out and rescheduled for the Houston race next March.

By that time, Halsey hopes to have many testing sessions completed which could enable his team to hit the ground running and generate the kinds of dominating performances he exerted during a memorable 2008 season where his Gene Fulton-powered, Tim McAmis Camaro became the first nitrous car into the five-second zone. Halsey was racing in quarter-mile competition but has been exclusive eighth-mile ever since.

“I don’t ever think we peaked at all this season,” Halsey admitted. “Last year we changed engine combinations right before this race. This year we are sticking to the tried and true.”

Halsey is committed to his 867-inch engine after introducing it late last season. He believes he’s just scratching the surface of its potential. For much of last season, he ran an 833.

“The engine we put in the car was plenty fast but we didn’t have a handle on it before we took it to last year’s Battle for the Belts,” Halsey said. “We got it, tested once and brought it to Dallas last year. The technology was a lot better than the old engine.”

And for Halsey, he’s planning to hit the ground running in 2011.
