ROY JOHNSON HONORED

Roy Johnson, engine builder and co-owner of J&J Racing, which fields the Mopar-powered NHRA POWERade Pro Stock car driven by Roy's son, Allen Johnson, was recently voted into the NHRA's Southeast Division 2 Hall of Fame. [Roy] Johnson will be inducted along with driver Billy Jacobs and veteran motorsports writer Norm Froscher in a ceremony scheduled for Jan. 5 at Orlando's Florida Hotel and Conference Center.

[Roy] Johnson bounced back from a heart attack suffered at a NHRA POWERade event in February and returned at the very next race, tuning the HEMI engines of his son Allen's Mopar J&J Racing Dodge Stratus R/T throughout the 2007 campaign. He helped Allen qualify for the new NHRA Countdown to 1 playoff and post a career best fourth-place finish in the final NHRA Pro Stock standings. When Allen scored a win at the Mopar Mile-High Nationals in July, [Roy] Johnson earned his fifth career NHRA Pro Stock victory as a car owner. nhraps29.jpgRoy Johnson, engine builder and co-owner of J&J Racing, which fields the Mopar-powered NHRA POWERade Pro Stock car driven by Roy's son, Allen Johnson, was recently voted into the NHRA's Southeast Division 2 Hall of Fame. The Greeneville, Tenn. native made a name for himself as a driver early in his career. He began racing go-karts in 1962 and later moved into dirt track racing until 1970, when he began drag racing. [Roy] Johnson drove an IHRA Super Stock 1962 Plymouth to numerous race victories, along with two Super Stock season championships and two runner-up season finishes in the early 1970s. He received factory backing for his Super Stock cars from Mopar, from 1976 through the early 1980s. In Division 2 Comp class competition, [Roy] Johnson banked several national wins and two championships in the mid-’80s. He has worked solely in drag racing since 1997, when he also began building Pro Stock Mopar engines.

"This is such an honor," said Roy, who will have his name placed on the walk of honor at Don Garlits Drag Racing Museum in Ocala, Fla. "Less than a year ago I wasn't even sure I'd be alive, so to be able to receive this honor and attend the induction ceremony is such a blessing."
