LAMATTINA GUNNING FOR AUSSIE TOP FUEL CHAMPIONSHIP

lamattina.jpgAfter taking out the last round of the Australian Top Fuel Championship at Perth's Motorplex circuit, just a fortnight ago, Phil Lamattina now believes he and his Fuchs Top Fueler can still win the 2008 Championship and aims to show further strides at Western Sydney International Dragway this weekend.

Lamattina made the comments ahead of this weekend's huge event at Western Sydney International Dragway, the Summernationals, where he plans to continue the momentum the team gained with their Perth victory - "It was our consistency that won us the Top Fuel Spectacular in Perth. The Fuchs Dragster was solid from the first pass and with sub five second ET's on all of our runs, we showed just how good this car is," said Phil.

"If we have any chance of taking on Phil Read for the championship, we have to continue to improve on what we achieved in Perth. We honestly feel that we can still win [the championship] and we will be giving it everything we can in Sydney."

"Getting a good result this weekend is crucial though. If we can do well, then we can start putting the pressure on Phil [Read] and we all know that pressure can make a big difference to the way people perform," Phil added.

Sydney-siders will get to see the new Fuchs Top Fueler for the first time this weekend and according to Lamattina, the striking new livery has set a new standard in Australian drag racing - "As soon as we had secured this new chassis, we've been working on ideas for our paint scheme. The guys at Mulqueen Creative are the best livery designers in the country and have come up with this sensational new look. In the flesh it looks amazing and I'd go as far as saying that it matches, if not betters, any of the liveries from the NHRA."

"Not only do we have one of the hardest working and most professional teams in drag racing but we now have the best looking as well. We are very proud that we are part of the huge effort that is going on behind the scenes to lift the standard of ANDRA Championship Drag Racing in this country."

Phil's positive words didn't stop him taking aim at a rival competitor though - "For some unknown reason, there seems to be some belief that the guys in our crew have all come to us after being trained up by another team or teams. I think that our results in Perth have rattled some of our competition and they have quickly forgotten that our crew was brand new at the start of the season and the reason we are making the progress that we are is due to the massive effort that [head Tuner] Theo is putting into the development of our guys."

Lamattina was also quick to mention the support from Sydney based sponsor CRC - "CRC have been a long time supporter of our team and as we head to Sydney this weekend, I wanted to send out our thanks for their continued backing. They are a huge investor into drag racing in Australia and I think all fans should recognise that," Lamattina concluded.
