CAPPS AT INDY 500 POLE DAY

Ron Capps, driver of the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car for Don Schumacher Racing in the 2008 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, will visit Pole Day at the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday, May 10.

Capps, in town from Carlsbad, Calif., for the wedding of Ronnie Thompson, the assistant crew chief on the NAPA Funny Car team, is eager to see how the drivers in the IndyCar Series qualify for the historic and prestigious Indy 500. Capps, in town from Carlsbad, Calif., for the wedding of Ronnie Thompson, the assistant crew chief on the NAPA Funny Car team, is eager to see how the drivers in the IndyCar Series qualify for the historic and prestigious Indy 500.

He compares his own recent efforts attempting to qualify for the top 16 spots in the highly-competitive 21-car-plus NHRA Funny Car fields to Indy's ‘Bump Day.’ "Each NHRA race weekend the final qualifying session is like trying to get into the Indy 500 on ‘Bump Day,’" he says. "We don’t have a ‘Pole Day.’ The fields are so tight and so close, sometimes you don't know if you're in until that last pair goes down the quarter-mile. I give the IndyCar drivers a lot of credit for enduring all those challenges this month. It should be a terrific Indy 500 on May 25. I'll be watching."
