John Force sounded a little disheveled when he called the offices of CompetitionPlus.com on Monday afternoon.

Okay, he sounded a lot disheveled.

“I’m just in the middle of meltdown, but I wanted to call you,” Force said, as he forgot the topic of the conversation.

Force was calling in response to Dave Despain’s comment on Sunday night’s Speed TV broadcast of Wind Tunnel that a rumor was circulating that suggested John Force was leading a group of investors that included television talk show icon Jay Leno in a effort to purchase the NHRA.

After Force’s publicity staff assured CompetitionPlus.com the rumor was absurd, they wanted to provide Force the chance to dispel the banter rather than issue a statement and bring forth more attention.

“Someone must have started that rumor,” Force added.

“I never ever thought about doing anything like that myself,” Force said. “I have enough problems of my own.”

The 14-time Funny Car champion resumed his meltdown and then quickly hung up the phone.
