An overwhelming majority of CompetitionPlus.com readers have a message for the NHRA, “Award the points; recognize the records.”

The question was posed to the readership on Monday, and by Wednesday, 67.1% had voted in favor of recognizing the driver/team achievements considering 1,000-foot racing will be enforced throughout the 2009 season.

Reader Paul Kroenke from a small town in Iowa offered this suggestion.

“With the quarter-mile gone for now, the 1,000-ft should still count for fastest ET and or MPH,” Kroenke wrote. “There is nothing anyone can do about it at this time and if the teams can achieve (which they can) they should be rewarded. Remember the fans enjoy the success of the teams probably almost as the teams do. We ‘feel’ their success.”

Michael Parsons of San Diego offered the opposite opinion.

“I am against recognizing any records for runs that end at 1000ft,” Parsons wrote. “In my mind these runs are still considered "aborted." If we begin to recognize records at 1000ft we will wrongfully condition the minds of the casual fan, and I believe that this will make it even more difficult to go back to what EVERYONE wants, and that is racing the full quarter-mile.”
