Field Will Set if Rains Set In …

Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Robert Hight (Funny Car) and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) were the early leaders in qualifying for the NHRA Kragen O’Reilly Winternationals in Pomona, Ca.

The unbelievable became the believable shortly before Noon. Pro Stock was called to the lanes after the NHRA successfully completed a round of eliminations for Stock eliminator and one round of Top Alcohol Dragster.

Four pairs of Pro Stockers ran before a rain shower halted the session.

Two hours later, action resumed with Anderson firing off a new track record 6.588 elapsed time at 209.59 miles per hour.

Robert Hight fired off a 4.037 second run to edge the 4.038 of Del Worsham to land top Funny Car spot. Last season’s championship runner-up Tim Wilkerson failed to get in the field during the first session.

Brown was the quicker of two Top Fuel drivers who eclipsed the quickest 1,000-foot run in drag racing history. His 3.708 elapsed time was more than enough to eclipse the incredible 3.748 of Joe Hartley. Unqualified after the first session was Larry Dixon.

Sources close to the situation have indicated that if rains return, the fields could be set on one session.
