Bandimere Speedway will feature the back-to-back night qualifying sessions at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals, this according to a press release from the facility located outside of Denver, Co.

The first stop on the three race Western Swing, a three race portion of the NHRA Full Throttle Series, will feature 8 pm qualifying sessions on both Friday and Saturday.

In other Bandimere Speedway news, the facility has almost finished a complete revamp of the shutdown area and sand trap.

All changes are being made as part of a complete redesign ordered by the National Hot Rod Association to maximize the safety of racers in the event of a mechanical malfunction.  The west wall of the shut down area is being lengthened to the north, as well as the west wall of the sand trap being lengthened to the south, and set at a 5 degree angle.  The south end of the sand trap is being extended by 20 feet and the north end of the sand trap is now being stocked with barrels to aid in the slowing of vehicles. Each row of barrels will be filled incrementally more the farther north the barrels go.

The first net will now be 5 feet tall and the second will now be 10 feet tall, as well as a 12 foot containment fence on the top the berm to the north of the sand trap.  On top of these actions, the overall length of the sand trap is being increased by 60 feet.  Along the west and east walls in the sand trap will be two access points large enough for emergency staff and maintenance vehicles.  As a result of the changes all drivers will have to be considerably slower to safely make the left turn to exit the race surface.  The final major change of the sand trap area is the replacement of the gravel type sand, with the new rounded, washed type gravel.
