ANDERSON NO. 1 FOR 12TH TIME THIS SEASON, TAKES PLENTY OF CONFIDENCE INTO RACE DAY

Greg Anderson is not worried about race day.

Despite all of the pressure, despite all of the pomp and circumstance that comes with competing for a championship in the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series, Anderson is actually the opposite of worried.

In fact, he believes there is no reason he won’t be the last man standing on Sunday, hoisting his fifth Pro Stock championship at the highest level of drag racing competition.

“I’ve got all the confidence in the world that my racecar is going to be great tomorrow,” Anderson said. “That is a great feeling. A confidence builder. You’ve got to have confidence rolling into race day when there is so much on the line. It is just a continuation of what my team has done for me all year long.

“In my heart of hearts, I know I have had the best racecar in the class all year long, so it would just be a crying shame for me to squander the opportunity and not get it done tomorrow.”

So far this weekend, Anderson has done everything right in his attempt to put distance between himself and his chief rival in the Pro Stock category Erica Enders. Coming into the weekend with just a one-round lead over Enders, Anderson has maxed out the amount of points he could earn in qualifying during the opening two days and will look to do the same on Sunday.

Anderson was quickest in all three qualifying sessions at the Auto Club NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, placing his HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro first on the ladder for the 12th time this season with a 6.558-second pass at 209.85 miles per hour during Q2 on Saturday.

“During the first run today, the sun was out, but it hadn’t been on the racetrack that long. So you still had your coolest racetrack. You had your best air conditions. By the book, you should have run the best on that run and we did,” Anderson said. “Quite honestly, I have made three qualifying runs that you can’t pick a hair out of any one. I’ve made three flawless runs and the car is happy as can be. The weather should be very similar to what we had the first two days tomorrow, so that gives us confidence going into Sunday.”

Kyle Koretsky qualified second in his Lucas Oil Camaro, slotting in behind Anderson with a 6.571 at 208.49 mph. Dallas Glenn, who is mathematically still a part of the championship conversion as well, qualified third with a 6.580 at 209.33 mph and Matt Hartford (6.587) was fourth.

Enders, the defending class champion who has nipped at the heels of Anderson all year long with four wins in half a dozen final rounds, qualified fifth with a 6.589 at 209.04 mph.

With the field set, Anderson shifts his sights to race day knowing that anything is possible. Despite never relinquishing the championship lead at any point this season, his first round loss two weeks ago in Las Vegas allowed Enders to close the gap, setting up another epic chapter in the rivalry between the two.

“It is a lot of pressure to put on yourself, and there are certainly no guarantees. Anybody can still beat anybody, but I’ve got the best horse in the stable tomorrow. Hopefully I can ride it like a champion and find my way to a championship,” Anderson said. “It has been a year or two since I have been all the way to the top. I’m just going to cross every finger and every toe I’ve got and hopefully the good lord shines on me and I can make quality run after quality run and drive it like a champion.”

Anderson draws John Callahan in round one on Sunday and would potentially meet Enders in the semifinals if both drivers win their races. Enders will face Steve Graham in round one.

Already making history this season surpassing Warren Johnson as the winningest driver in class history, a championship on Sunday would not only be his first since 2010, it would give Anderson five titles in the class, breaking a tie with Enders.

“This is a special year. It has been a special year all year long, but I can’t explain to you what (winning) would mean to me,” Anderson said. “It would mean more than any of my other championships in any of my other race seasons. The table is set and I couldn’t ask for any more.”
