ANDERSON VAULTS TO TOP IN PRO STOCK, EYES ANOTHER INDY WIN

Greg Anderson at any race track is an incredible driver. At the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, the five-time Pro Stock world champion seems to become even better.

The six-time Indy winner, who trails just Bob Glidden’s nine for the Pro Stock lead, was back to his usual tricks on Saturday, jumping to the top spot with a run of 6.561 at 210.11 mph.

Two qualifying sessions remain, but regardless of what happens Sunday Anderson believes he has a car that can win in Indy, which shouldn’t surprise anyone.

“Bottom line, I’ve got a great race car,” Anderson said. “I’ve got a fast car and I’m very happy. This place is just magic to me. I love racing at the U.S. Nationals. I’ve got a lot of great history here and looking to create some more.”

Despite all his U.S. Nationals success, he’s more than ready for that seventh victory at the famed race.

His last win came in 2011, a trend Anderson would like to see come to an end this year. After remarkable conditions on Friday, Anderson found a way to slip past rookie Tanner Gray’s top time from a night ago.

It was also just about as ideal of a run a driver could want, and he knows if he can replicate that on Monday, another U.S. Nationals Wally could be going home with him.

“To be honest, (I was) a little bit surprised,” Anderson said. “The weather conditions were great out there, but not nearly what they were (Friday). Quite honestly, as a group we all missed a little bit (Friday). We knew, even though the weather conditions were a little off today, we could get close to that. It took a very, high-quality run. I didn’t leave much on the table. I think I got it all. It’s going to be tough to get around.”

There could be a chance to knock Anderson off the top spot Sunday morning before temperatures get hot, but he likes where his Camaro is headed with Indy eliminations and the Countdown to the Championship approaching.

He’s less than 40 points behind Gray for second place, while getting his KB Racing teammates Jason Line and Bo Butner on track for Monday is also a priority. Butner, the current points leader, is qualified fourth with a 6.572, while Line sits in 12th with a 6.61.

Having all three locked in for the Countdown is the goal, and after Saturday it appears Anderson is in a good spot to make a run at another world title.

“Right now, mine is performing better than the other two (Line and Butner) so we’re going to have a lot of focus getting those two up to speed (Sunday),” Anderson said. “I expect by Monday we’ll have a serious 1-2-3 bunch. I can’t wait to go to battle. We’re trying to get seeded (in the Countdown) as high as we can.”
