GREG ANDERSON KEEPS THINGS ROLLING WITH NO. 1 QUALIFYING POSITION IN NORWALK

This weekend isn’t over yet, but it has already been fantastic for Greg Anderson.

Anderson, NHRA’s all-time leader in Pro Stock wins with 105, qualified No. 1 at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio, thanks to his 6.592-second elapsed time at 204.94 mph from Q1 Friday. He followed that up Saturday by winning the #Mission2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge race.

“First of all, it has been a great week,” Anderson said. “I got here on Wednesday morning and spent all day at Summit, and I got to chat with all the great employees again. I didn’t get to do that last year, and it was great to see them all. It fires you up and makes you feel good. To come over here to Summit Motorsports Park with the wrap I have on my race car, it is just a proud weekend for me.

“We are off to a great start. We had a great day (Friday), a little hiccup (Friday night), but we are not going to talk about, not worry about it. We had a great day (Saturday). The car ran great, and we went on our way to another Mission2Fast2Tasty win. I guess we are figuring that deal out. I struggled with that for a long time, but it looks like we are getting the hang of it. All good, all great.”

This is Anderson’s 127th career No. 1 qualifier and third this season to go along with Charlotte, N.C., and Bristol, Tenn.

“We have a great tune-up" for Sunday, Anderson said. “The Summit Nationals, that’s what I’m looking forward to. That’s the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for me. I just really, really can come out (Sunday) feeling as well as I did (Saturday). If my race car cooperates like it did (Saturday), we can have a great day. We are going to have a big weather switch (Sunday), so everybody is going to have a lot of changes on their race cars. I have great faith in my team that they will get it done.”

Anderson acknowledged that being in race-day mode Saturday for the 2Fast2Tasty Challenge benefits him for Sunday. He won the Challenge on Saturday by defeating Elite Motorsports teammates Aaron Stanfield and reigning world champion Erica Enders.

“Well, it helps me a ton. I need all the race reps I can get,” he said. “Obviously I'm advancing in age, and I need to do whatever I can to get my heart started sometimes. So, all the motivation I can find, and I've certainly got all the motivation in the world this weekend. Everything is on the line for me. A lot of pressure. I love that. That's what helps me. That's what helps me get up on the wheel and get the job done. So hopefully (Sunday) is another great day. I love racing on Saturday. I'd love to race every day. Qualifying's cool, but it's all about racing. Race days are everything. So, now we have two race days in a weekend. It's awesome.”

Anderson faces Larry Morgan in the first round Sunday. Anderson is tied for most Pro Stock wins in Norwalk at three with Enders. Anderson won his Wallys in 2008, 2010 and 2015. Enders has claimed Norwalk titles in 2014, 2021 and 2022.

Anderson, who is part of the powerhouse KB Titan Racing team, likes where his team is at right now.

“We've got five cars here under our umbrella, and all five cars are qualified in the top seven of the field. So that's a pretty darn good feather in the hat right there, and incredible,” he said. “So, we've got depth. Everybody's happy. All the customers are happy, all the cars have great chances to win rounds and win the race. So, it's going to be a challenge (Sunday). And not just an out-of-family challenge, it's going to be an in-family challenge for me. I'm sure I'll have a chance at somebody on my team somewhere along the line, hopefully, if I advance. So going to have to find a way to beat them all, and they're just as tough as anybody out there right now. It’s all great for KB Titan right now. KB Titan is very proud, and the guys are doing a hell of a job.”

Anderson then went into a little deep detail explaining the runs he has made so far this weekend.

“I was a little shocked at the first run (Saturday) when I ran 61. I didn't think I could do that. I thought I could run 62,” Anderson said. “I honestly felt (Friday) night, if I could've got to run last night, I could've run 57 or 58. I really felt that way. Everybody looked like they slowed down four to five from last night and that put it at a 61 or two, so I was right in line, but it needed some cleanup on that run. So, we were able to clean things up for the final, and it ran better, and that's what got the job done. Any way you can find a way to win rounds, you get another chance to make your race car better. So that's what you got to do. You got to find a way to win. Find a way to advance, get another chance to make your race car better, and that's what we did" Saturday.

Anderson arrived in Norwalk second in the points standings, and he’s optimistic he can move up Sunday.

“Honestly, we really have hit a happy spot with this race car. We did that early in the season,” he said. “It's really been great all year long. I think I had one race that it wasn't perfect. Other than that, other than Epping, that race car has been perfect all year long, and either I've made a mistake, or we've made a mistake with the race car. So, it's all come together right now, and we're not making mistakes. And everybody's working in harmony. We've got great, great confidence in this race car, but then we've also got great confidence in the rest of our fleet. That helps, too. We can learn from them for this race car. They can learn from my race car for their car. It’s just a great package right now.”

Despite all his success this weekend, Anderson knows everything starts over Sunday, especially because of the  Mother Nature's plans.

“There are so many things that are going to have to be changed overnight or you'll get smoked right away" Sunday. So, you're going to have to make wholesale changes and hope you hit the target fairly close again,” Anderson said. “It's going to be the same type of deal. I expect that we'll make a ton of changes, and you'll come out first round and you probably won't be exactly right with everything because there's so many changes to be made. So, you've got to find a way to advance, find a way to win, and get that car better as the day goes on, and hopefully progress through the day. So that's what it's going to be to me. We'll do as best a job we can to get it ready for E1 but knowing it probably won't be perfect. And hopefully find a way to win first round and get a chance to make it better the second round.”
