GREG ANDERSON TURNS FOCUS TO COUNTDOWN

Reigning NHRA world champion Pro Stock pilot Greg Anderson checked a milestone off his career resume at the U.S. Nationals on Sept. 5.

Anderson, the reigning world champ, captured his 100th NHRA national event win at Lucas Oil Raceway Park in Indianapolis.

Now, Anderson is aiming for his sixth career Pro Stock world championship to go with the ones he collected in 2003-05, 2010 and 2021.

The points are reset for the six-race Countdown to the Championship and Anderson is third in the points standings just 30 points back of leader Erica Enders.

The Countdown begins at the Pep Boys Nationals, Sept. 15-18 in Reading, Pa.

“Everybody worries me, and the even bigger news yet is we should be worrying them right now,” Anderson said. “We were not a worry to them two months ago. We were not even an afterthought, a concern. It was their year. It was Team Elite's year and Erica's year and deservedly so. They did a great job over the winter, and they made big gains. So, I'm very proud of the recovery we've made.

“Here we are, we're resetting the points. And I've said it many times before, I'm not a big proponent of the way we do this playoff deal, where you throw away all the points that everybody's even at the end, because there's been too many years that ... We've had years like Erica's had this year, where you come in with a huge lead and you could no way lose the championship, unless you reshuffled the deck. And this year's going to play into my favor. It's going to give me a chance and I guess it evens out. So that's what they keep telling me every time I complain about it. They go, ‘Leave it out. You'll get your chance the other way sometime where it will help you.’ So that's this year and as we're shuffling the deck, they certainly know we're here and we know they're not going away.”

Anderson definitely has excelled in the Countdown to Championship races since the format’s inception in 2007. In 78 career Countdown races, Anderson has 14 wins and 11 runner-up efforts.

Anderson also won three races in the Countdown a year ago – Charlotte, N.C., Dallas and Pomona, Calif.

“It's going to be a dog fight,” Anderson said. “Just like I said last year, even more so this year, of the 10 cars that are your top 10 cars, if eight of them aren't favorites to win, I'll leave my hat. I can't pick a favorite. I really can't, so it's great. It's great for Pro Stock.”
