HOW DOES MOTORSPORTS IMPACT A LOCAL ECONOMY? TULSA RACE TRACKS REVEAL THEIRS

A recent study by the United States Motorsports Association (USMA) revealed that Tulsa Raceway Park and Tulsa Speedway generate $83.2 million annually for their local economy. The report, titled “Turbocharging Oklahoma: Discovering the Economic Power of Tulsa Raceway Park and Tulsa Speedway,” provides a detailed analysis of the facilities' economic impact.

Conducted by Dr. Robert Dunn, the study indicates that the racetracks support 547 jobs and contribute $37.6 million in annual local earnings. Additionally, they attract over 370,000 visitors each year, driving spending in the community across various sectors including accommodations and dining.

The findings further highlight the impact of race teams, which contribute $28 million annually. Fans, with 72% identifying as “very enthusiastic” or “absolute fanatics,” travel from as far as 325 miles away to attend events, with 29% coming from 29 different states.

Comparatively, Tulsa's racetracks consistently outperform other regional sporting events. The Rocklahoma music festival attracts around 60,000 attendees, while the racetracks collectively host approximately 113 events annually.

While major golf events contribute roughly $100 million, the racetracks’ annual impact of $83 million is significant due to their consistent yearly activity. Over the next five years, their economic contributions are projected to exceed $415 million.

Dr. Robert Dunn emphasized the racetracks' role as economic engines for Tulsa and Oklahoma. “Our analysis showcases significant contributions to tourism, commerce, and employment,” he said.

The study also presented a hypothetical scenario where hosting a National Hot Rod Association event could add approximately $32.2 million to Tulsa’s economy, revealing additional potential for growth.

Todd Martin and Keith Haney, owners of Tulsa Raceway Park, expressed their commitment to the community. “This study affirms the economic growth driven by motorsports," they said. "We aim to collaborate with local leaders to maximize community benefits.”

Tulsa Raceway Park has been an Oklahoma motorsports hub since 1966, while Tulsa Speedway has revitalized the region's racing scene with its dirt track offerings. The USMA aims to highlight the economic and social benefits of motorsports nationwide.
