IF HERERRA WASN'T RACING BIKES, WHAT WOULD HE RACE?

Don't be surprised if the field in NHRA's Pro Stock Motorcycle division suddenly encourages sophomore rider Gaige Herrera to pursue his bucket list items outside of riding the Mission Foods-sponsored Vance & Hines Suzuki.

And it's easy to understand why. Herrera's won six of eight races, while the rest have two. He's qualified No. 1 in seven of eight races. Herrera now leads the closest competition in the championship points by 359 points.

So what other drag racing category intrigues him?

Interestingly enough, Herrera's grandfather raced in the Gasser scene of the 1960s with a blown Austin-Healy, so it's no surprise he might gravitate toward cars.

"I would love to do Funny Car or at least try it," Herrera admitted. "Other than that, I've always loved Pro Mod or Pro Stock cars just because there's so much going on as far as driving the cars, having to shift them and having clutch and all that as far as a Pro Stock car. Other than motorcycles, that would probably be what I would do if I could."

No Top Fuel Harley-Davidson?

"That would be a hard no," he added with a smile.

"I would stay away from the Harleys, but I'd be more Top Fuel as far as, like, what Larry McBride and those guys do," Herrera added.

Korry Hogan has been the quickest aboard a Harley with a 5.789, while   McBride has been as quick as 5.507 seconds.

What's wrong with the Nitro Hog?

"I just feel like that's really strapping yourself to the bomb," Herrera said. "I don't know about all that."

But strapping yourself to a rocket is safer?

"A regular Top Fuel bike ain't strapping yourself to a bomb," Herrera surmised.
