IGNITOR NITRO OPENER WILL CELEBRATE 50TH ANNIVERSARY

The NAPA Auto Parts Ignitor presented by Peterson Chevrolet achieves a new milestone in 2021 as Firebird’s longest running event celebrates its 50th year. Set for Saturday and Sunday, May 1-2, the traditional northwest season opener will jumpstart the NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Funny Car Series.

Nitro Funny Cars are set to test Fri., April 30th, from noon till 6 pm. Saturday will showcase three qualifying heats at noon, 3 pm and 6 pm. Final eliminations in the Stinker Stores Nitro Knockout kick off at high noon on Sunday.

Leading an impressive field is the reigning NHRA Heritage World Champion Bobby Cottrell at the wheel of the Bucky Austin “Northwest Hitter”. The field includes an even dozen cars looking to qualify for the 8 car field, including Don Nelson’s “California Hustler”, Jerry Espeseth, “Hollywood Kris” Krabill driving for Cecil Matthews, Billy Morris “Problem Child”, Keith Clark's "Quarter Pounder", Michael Peck's "Instigator", Jeff Gregory's "Madness", Bill Windham “Shakedown”, Jim Broome's “Speed Sport” and Chris Davis “Old School Nitro”.

In addition, sportsman racers in the Boise Muffler/NAPA Gold Cup Series will vie for the richest purse in Ignitor history, as the winners of Super Pro on Saturday and Sunday will pocket a cool $5,000 in cash daily.

Originating in 1971, the first Ignitor attracted a four-car ensemble, which included Don Prudhomme, Jerry Ruth, Kenney Goodell and Charlie Allen. The “Snake” would be crowned the inaugural Ignitor champion five decades ago. And for 50 consecutive years, Firebird has hosted nitro cars at the Ignitor, a significant feat in its own right.
