LINE TOPS PRO STOCK FIELD FOR FIFTH TIME AT ENGLISHTOWN

Right now, it’s good being Jason Line.

Five wins, eight finals, five top qualifier awards, and a nearly insurmountable championship lead 10 races into a 24-event marathon, there really isn’t much you can find to be disappointed about nearly halfway into the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season.

Just ask the man yourself.

“Right now, it is pretty good to be me,” said Line after securing his fifth top qualifier award of the season Saturday in Englishtown. “It is a nice thing to not have to think about, or not have to worry about, what everyone else is doing. We are just thinking about how to move forward. That is what racing is about, trying to be better than everyone else and moving forward.”

Line earned his third straight number one qualifier award and the 46th of his career Saturday at the NHRA Summernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, racing to the top of the charts in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro Friday evening and holding that advantage through two more challenges on Saturday.

And the scary part is, the team is only getting better.

Line’s pass of 6.519 at 212.56 mph Friday was his quickest lap of the season as he held off his KB Racing teammate Greg Anderson by a decent margin. Anderson followed suit with the fastest lap of the year in qualifying second with a 6.533 at 212.93 mph.

“It is exciting for us. We both had great runs and I think we learned a couple things,” Line said. “I should have probably run a 213, but I made a mistake at the finish line. I got the chute out a tick early, I actually got there too fast.

“I wouldn’t say we have mastered these cars. I don’t know what everybody else does, I just know that obviously we have worked hard on it and we have been lucky enough to work on the right things. We have been fast and hopefully it will continue to stay that way.”

Bo Butner qualified third Saturday in Englishtown with a 6.540 at 212.53, while Vincent Nobile (6.541) and Allen Johnson (6.565) round out the top five.

With the Pro Stock lineup one car shy of a full field, Line will receive a bye in the opening round and will face either Erica Enders or Jeg Coughlin in round two. After failing to reach the final for the first time all year last weekend in Epping, N.H., Line will look to get back on track on Sunday.

“We fell off our role last week, had a serious hiccup, but my car is great right now” Line said. “We definitely learned some things today and I think we will have a good tuneup for tomorrow. The other teams are gaining, there is no question. Hopefully we can find some more power and pull back ahead this weekend.”
