MATT SMITH TOPS PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE QUALIFYING SHEET AT INDIANAPOLIS

Making horsepower, winning races and world championships has been a staple for Pro Stock Motorcycle racer Matt Smith.

Smith, a three-time world champ, the last coming in 2018, had his talent on display Saturday at the inaugural Dodge NHRA Indy Nationals presented by Pennzoil in Indianapolis.

Smith clocked a 6.807-second lap at 199.23 mph to set a track record elapsed time at Lucas Oil Raceway and snare the No. 1 qualifying spot.

"I think the (two qualifying sessions) makes it better for our team," Smith told nhra.com.  "We're normally pretty good for the first two runs. You give these guys four runs and a lot of people catch up to us a lot more often so I'm pretty happy with having just two runs."

Smith, who pilots a Denso-sponsored Erik Buell Racing motorcycle, now has 39 career No. 1 qualifying spots in his storied PSM career.

Smith, who also won world titles in 2007 and 2013, grabbed his first career No. 1 qualifying position in the Pro Stock Motorcycle class in 2005 at the final race of that season in Pomona, Calif.

The second-generation racer also made the quickest pass in Q2 with a 6.845-second lap at 197.88 mph. Smith collected six bonus points Saturday for his qualifying runs.

Smith meets No. 16 qualifier Kelly Clontz in round one Sunday. Eliminations begin at 9 a.m. (ET) Sunday.

He arrived in Indy this weekend second in the points standings. At the first and only other PSM national event in Indy two weeks ago, Smith was runner-up to first-time national event winner Ryan Oehler. Smith qualified No. 2 at that event.

A year ago, Smith finished third in the points standings. He had two wins and a 28-14 elimination-round record. Smith has 24 national event PSM wins in his career.
