NITRO VETERAN JOHNNY WEST TOPS BOISE AA/FA QUALIFYING

FRIDAY: COTTRELL, HORAN PACE FRIDAY QUALIFYING

The fields are now set for the 50th anniversary Nightfire Nationals in Boise, Idaho.

Johnny West thundered from worst to first in the final day of qualifying, driving to the pole of the AA/Fuel Altered division. The nitro divisions headed by Bobby Cottrell (Nostalgia Funny Car) and Dan Horan Jr. (Nostalgia Top Fuel) remained at the top of their respective divisions. Ed Marx took over the top spot in Pro Modified.

West, the longtime fuel Funny Car racer who is a noted tuner in today's Big Show, came from the outside looking into the No. 1 position with a 6.100. West will take on Shayne Stewart in round one.

Friday's number one qualifier was relegated to the second slot. Nick Van Horn stood fast on his 6.16-second run. He will take on "Nasty" David Benjamin.

No. 3 qualifier Tom Padilla will take on Hilo, Hawaii's Derrick Moreira in round one, and the final pairing James Generalao will use his No. 4 position to face off with Randy Bradford.

Nostalgia Funny Car icon Cottrell remained number one, with his 5.66, 257.28 from Friday. He will take on James Day, known for his starting line prowess.

No. 2 qualifier Matt Bynum got a handle on Cecil Matthew's Camaro and shot to a 5.71, 256.02. Bynum will take on Tony Jurado in round one.

Michael Peck was relegated to the number three position. Peck will face Billy Morris and the Problem Child Camaro.

The final matchup for round one will pit Geoff Monise, who is recovering from a nasty fire at the Ignitor earlier in the year, and will face off with Kamaka Pocock.

Horan remained on the pole for the dragsters. He will take on Bryan Hall in round one. The winner of that match will draw a bye to the final round.

Jim Murphy improved his position to number two with a 5.79, 248.80 in Q2. He will have Tyler Hilton in round one.

The final pair will feature Adam Sorokin and Bret Williamson, and Sorokin will have lane choice.

In Pro Mod with the odd number field. Ed Marx, who was the slowest qualifier on Friday, fixed that situation and will take the bye into round one for being the low qualifier with a 5.96.246.89.

Sean Renteria will take on Andrew Moeck in round one. No. 3 qualifier Jeremy Hanger has a date with Garrett Richards to close out round one of Pro Mod.

Eliminations are scheduled to start at 12:00 noon, MDT.
