PEERY RIPS THE ROCK FOR 2ND AHDRA WIN OF ’21

Ryan Peery has found something at Rockingham Dragway that definitely suits his Milford, Ohio-based motorcycle.

Peery was the No. 1 qualifier Saturday and laid down the quickest elapsed time in every round of eliminations Sunday to capture the AHDRA’s Nitro Summer Nationals. It was his second AHDRA victory of the season, as he took Top Fuel honors Atlanta Dragway on April 18.

Peery put his bike on the pole Saturday at 6.394 seconds, then ran an event-best 6.365 at 218 mph in the Sunday’s noon opening round of eliminations. He was the only Top Fuel rider to crack the 6.6-second barrier during the weekend to dominate the action. Peery was the runner-up in last year’s event to Jay Turner after having qualified No. 1.

Peery’s first-round victim was Asheville’s Tracy Kile. In the semis, though he slowed to 6.615, 215, he was able to take down the 6.887, 204.05, by Tim Kerrigan of Novato, Calif.

In the finals, Peery took down Jimmy McMillon, who had knocked out 2017 NHRA champ Jay Turner in the opening round and Tii Tharpe, the 2018-19 NHRA titlist, in the semifinals. Peery ran 6.509, 214.49, for the gold to easily handle McMillon’s 7.771, 167.07. Tharpe had advanced out of the first round by upending No. 2 qualifier and 2020 AHDRA champ Rich Vreeland of Bloomsburg, Pa.

Among the other winners were: Chris Smith of Murfreesboro, Tenn., who rode a Peery-owned entry to victory in Nitro Funny Bike; Preston Barlett of Palatka, Fla., who downed top qualifier Jim Martin of Palatine, Ill., for the trophy in Pro Fuel; and Gary Douglass of Staunton, Va., who captured Pro Modified by toppling No. 1 qualifier Shane Pendergrast.

Other winners included local rider Kevin Campbell of Southern Pines in Pro Open, Ken Strauss of Terrell in Top Eliminator, and John Hendrzak of Delta, Pa., who won Saturday’s Dial-In Eliminator and was one of the last three in the same class when weather forced officials to suspend competition Sunday.  Those still in contention when racing was halted split the remaining purse money in their respective brackets.

Joe Gladden of Kings Mountain was able to win the Bagger class on both days, and Jeremiah Cullen of Ayden followed his Saturday Trophy Class win with another on Sunday.
