PRITCHETT CAPTURES NO. 1 QUALIFYING POSITION AT EPPING

The stellar season for Leah Pritchett isn’t missing a beat.

The Don Schumacher Racing driver captured the No. 1 qualifying spot with her track record elapsed time of 3.673 seconds at 328.86 mph during the third qualifying session Saturday at the New England Nationals in Epping, N.H.

“This whole entire weekend had been about team work and we hope to have four runs with it (Sunday),” Pritchett said.

Pritchett’s dragster is donning a special “Demon” paint scheme in the New England Nationals and next weekend at the Summernationals to salute the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon that will be available to the public later this year.

Pritchett arrived at Epping in the season points lead on the strength of three wins. This is Pritchett’s third No. 1 qualifying position in 2017 as she also was tops on the qualifying ladder at the season-opening Winternationals in Pomona, Calif., and the second race of the year in Phoenix. Pritchett has four Top Fuel No. 1 qualifying spots in her career.

“It’s not going to be A to B runs and just lift off it,” said Pritchett about race day. “This track is going to be so killer (Sunday) and it’s going to need a lot of power and that’s what this team does is make power. And we’re just going to try and be as consistent as possible.”

This season Pritchett has been amazing. She established an NHRA world-record time of 3.658 seconds in Phoenix. At the last event at Topeka, Kan., Pritchett qualified No. 2 and lost in the semis to her DSR teammate and eventual race winner Antron Brown.

“We have the right people in the right places and this has been a great year,” Pritchett said.

A year ago, at Epping, Pritchett, driving for Lagana Racing, qualified No. 10 and lost to Tony Schumacher in the second round.

Pritchett receives a bye in the first round Sunday and will face the winner of Steve Torrence and Doug Kalitta in the second round.
