PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE RACER CORY REED SWITCHING TO PRO STOCK RANKS

Cory Reed, a lifetime motorcross and Pro Stock Motorcycle racer, is changing his career path.

Reed confirmed to CompetitionPlus.com he recently obtained his NHRA Pro Stock driver’s license and is set to make his debut in the class at either the Northwest Nationals July 19-21 in Seattle or the Denso Sonoma (Calif.) Nationals, July 26-28.

“My dad (Jim Whitely) is part owner of KB (Titan Racing, based in Mooresville, N.C.) and this is just a natural progression,” Reed said. “It was time to move on to something else.”

Reed said he received his Pro Stock license a couple of weeks ago at Rockingham (N.C.) Dragway.

“I think I made 16 (runs) in two days,” Reed said. “I had never driven a door car (before getting this license). It was nice. It was a lot more relaxing than a motorcycle. The burnout is hard as sh*t. You get used to using different parts of your body and overall, it was fun.”

Reed was driving a KB Titan Racing Camaro during his licensing runs.

“The fastest I went is when the slip said I went 6.59 seconds to 1,000 feet,” Reed said. “There wasn’t really anything that surprised me. I kind of went into this with a blank mind and it was fun. It is nice to have a new experience in life. I knew for a fact I didn’t really know what I was doing so I kind of went in there not overthinking anything because I didn’t know what to expect.”

With his license in hand, Reed expects to be racing Pro Stock sooner rather than later.

“I think in the next couple of races we will be out there,” Reed said. “I think these guys (at KB Titan Racing) work their butts off so I’m sure will be going testing again soon. They are workaholics and they like going testing so if I have another chance to go drive, I will. If not, I will be (racing) in Seattle or Sonoma, one or the two. After we go to one of those races, we will probably finish the season (in Pro Stock).”

Reed said putting his Pro Stock motorcycle parts and pieces together isn’t in the plans right now.

“We are not really working on that stuff anymore and we have a bunch of other stuff going on in the background of our lives,” Reed said. “It is time for a change.”

Reed said fellow Pro Stock racer and his best friend Joey Gladstone will be working with him in his Pro Stock venture. Gladstone finished a career-best second in the 2022 Pro Stock Motorcycle NHRA world standings.

“I think at first, Joey will be doing the clutch on my Pro Stock car,” Reed said.

Gladstone is ready for a new chapter as well.

“I will probably just do the natural progression and just say ‘Yes’ when they ask me to do something,” Gladstone said. “I like a challenge.”

Reed made his Pro Stock debut in the Pro Stock Motorcycle class in the fall of 2015 with George and Jackie Bryce’s Star Racing team.

Reed competed in 60-plus career PSM races. He ran 11 races in 2021 prior to having a horrific wreck in the second round of Charlotte’s fall race of 2021. He wrecked into his teammate Gladstone’s motorcycle after the finish line and injured his leg.

“I imagined myself driving something one of everything my family owns eventually, not Pro Stock car though because the Pro Stock car thing came on so quickly into the family,” Reed said. “This is a little reset, refresh. The motorcycle thing just got stale. I was ready to do something different and my wife and my mom are happy about me getting off a motorcycle. It was time to move on and grow up.”
