REED MAKES BVR DEBUT AS PART OF 2-CAR TEAM
Shawn Reed will make his 2019 debut this weekend at the NHRA Springnationals in Houston in the Bob Vandergriff Racing Top Fuel Dragster, sponsored by Hughes Oilfield Transportation. It will also be the first race of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing season with two BVR cars entered in competition.
“I’m excited to get back in the driver’s seat; it’s been a long time. My last race was in Pomona 2018,” Reed said. “At these past few races with Jordan (Vandergriff) driving I’ve been taking in everything around me, learning to do more jobs on the car and working with the crew chiefs.”
Reed will be driving a dragster specially designed by Morgan Lucas race shop. BVR Crew Chief Ron Douglas has been on top of this project to make sure the car is ready for Reed’s debut.
“Shawn came to the shop in February after testing and we put him in the seat to work on pedal and level placement and general fitting. He came back last week and we made a few final changes to make sure he fit in the car properly,” said Douglas.
The BVR race team skipped the NHRA 4-Wides in Las Vegas and spent that time preparing to bring out two Top Fuel Dragsters for the first time this year. Douglas will be crew chief on Jordan Vandergriff’s dragster, and Joe Barlam will be calling the shots on Reed’s dragster.
“This all wouldn’t be happening without Bob. He made the investment and brought in all the right people to make our teams competitive. One of those people is Joe Barlam,” said Douglas. “Joe is a great asset to our team. He was with BVR before, so he knows how our program works. While I will be on Jordan’s car and Joe will be on Shawn’s, we are able to help each other out. Both cars have the same basic set up. After each run, we plan to get together to see how we can improve each car so we can keep making our racing program stronger.”
Team owner Bob Vandergriff is eager to have both of his dragsters competing in Houston. Vandergriff won the Springnationals as a driver back in 2013.
"I'm looking forward to having two BVR cars on the track this weekend. I'm expecting Shawn's car to perform just like Jordan's and that will give us two chances to win the race,” said Vandergriff.
