ROY JOHNSON HEADED TO EAST COAST DRAG TIMES DRAG RACING HALL OF FAME

Roy Johnson just wanted to drag race; accolades were the least thing on his mind.

Five decades after he first drag raced the elder Johnson, who serves as crew chief on son Allen Johnson's Pro Stocker, is going into the East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame. The induction is scheduled for February 2017.

"Well, when I started this years ago, I never thought anybody would think of me as Hall of Fame material," Johnson said.

The records speak otherwise.

Johnson, a two-time IHRA Super Stock champion, and successful NHRA sportsman racer readily admits the thought of presenting a speech to his peers troubles him way more than drag racing any race for a championship.

"I can’t give a speech to save my life," Johnson admitted. "I know they put me in the Don Garlits Hall of Fame and my speech was very, very short. I hadn’t even thought about it yet. Giving a speech, it's kind of one of those things you don't want to think about, like going to the dentist.

"I am thankful for what people have done for me and helped me along the way. That’s about all I know. I mean, I don’t feel like I’ve done anything great. I’ve been average, maybe. But I’ve never satisfied myself with the quality of performance I’ve produced."

Regardless of what value he puts on his accomplishments, being honored amongst the drag racing greats really put the value on what he's earned in his lifetime.

"I never dreamed of anything like that as I come along," Johnson said. "To put me in beside them, I thought, ‘Really, Roy, you must have done something right along the way."

And Johnson has, even if personally he doesn't feel worthy.
