TOP FUEL VETERAN DOUG KALITTA GOES TO NO. 1 AT PHOENIX WITH CAREER-BEST PASS

Top Fuel driver Doug Kalitta added another line to his storied career.

Kalitta clocked a career-best 3.657-second run elapsed time at 329.58 mph to take the provisional No. 1 spot Friday at the Arizona Nationals, Friday at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Phoenix.

The run was a product of new tuning alliance with world championship tuners Alan Johnson and Brian Husen joining Kalitta Motorsports in the offseason.

“The thing left hard, and it seemed like it was going straight and just a little squirely at the end,” Kalitta said. “But I could definitely tell that thing was hauling harder than any run I had ever been on. I’m just super proud of my guys everybody has been busting their tail on this thing and obviously with Alan Johnson and Brian (Husen) and all the effort they have brought to our team, and we couldn’t be more excited.”

At the season-opening Winternationals last weekend, Kalitta qualified fifth and lost in the first round to Tony Schumacher.

He enters the Phoenix event with 49 career Top Fuel victories and 50 No. 1 qualifier positions, and he was even caught off guard how quick it was.

“I was definitely looking forward figuring out what we had run and so that’s what a 65 feels like, that was cool,” Kalitta said. “It was good. The conditions are going to be cool this week and Sunday is going to be a little warmer, but I’m real pleased and we will see what (Saturday) brings and see if we can stay No. 1.

“We’re just hoping to have a great weekend out here and just keep building on our momentum.”

Kalitta acknowledged his electrifying lap Friday was just the shot in the arm his team needed.

“We have been working really hard and this would be the perfect race to have a good race on Sunday,” Kalitta said. “It is an incredible team effort that has gone into it. Even Jason McCullough, he helped with setting up our cars and reconfiguring everything and just retooling everything. Some of the guys on my team are learning and rolling with the changes and it has been interesting for them to see the difference how they go about everything with prepping the car. Chad Head was a big part of talking to Connie (Kalitta) and talking with Alan (Johnson) and just kind of putting this whole thing together. I’m definitely going to take Chad out to dinner tonight to start with.

“I’m just along for the ride on this operation with how Alan has this tuned up. We will go up there every run and try and run as quick as the track will allow.”
