TORRENCE KEEPS MOMENTUM GOING WITH PROVISIONAL NO. 1 AT TOPEKA

The roll Top Fuel driver Steve Torrence has been on of late isn't slowing down.

Torrence, who has won the last two races at Charlotte and Atlanta, followed those performances up by capturing the provisional No. 1 qualifying spot at the Menards NHRA Nationals presented by Minties Friday at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan.

Torrence clocked a 3.682-second lap at 328.54 mph in his Capco Contractors dragster to snare the top spot.

“With the weather conditions we have here it was very imperative to go out and make a good lap,” Torrence said. “We saw quite a few cars go out and smoke the tires in front of us. We knew the conditions were going to be conducive to go and run well, whether the track could take it or not. Going up there, I kind of heard some the tune-up calls the guys were making, what we were going to do with the clutch and how we were going to run the engine and I knew we were going for it. A 68 was a really stout run and I think second was a 72, and it just shows you that it was probably a little bit on the edge of what it could’ve been.”

Torrence doesn’t believe Saturday will offer the same type of conditions Friday did.

“I think the conditions will be good (Saturday), but not the same as we had (Friday night), and I don’t think we will see any mid to low 60s,” he said. “I feel like we are safe. We will go into race day (Sunday) with a good hot rod and try and work on that consistency and see if we can go some rounds.”

As for Saturday, Torrence said his team will continue with business as usual.

“We’re not really going to change our strategy,” Torrence said. “We will still go out and run the car the same way we have been and just race the conditions and the track we are given. I don’t think you will be able to go out and run the same number right now, it just depends what the conditions are, but I think we will have a little sun (Saturday) and it will be a different scenario. We are just going to work on our consistency and race ourselves and race the track and I think everything else will come along.”
