FRIDAY IHRA BUDDS CREEK QUALIFYING

BruceLittonIt is not often that a track is so good that drivers can’t handle it, but that was just the case Friday night.

Perfect conditions wreaked havoc on a majority of the competitors on the opening day of the IHRA President’s Cup Nationals at Maryland International Raceway, but for the few who were able to figure it out Friday made for some of the most exciting passes of the year.

Highlighting Friday’s opening round was Kenny Lang’s world record pass of 5.884 seconds to place him on top of the Pro Modified charts, while Bruce Litton (Top Fuel) and Pete Berner (Pro Stock) also figured out the conditions and rocketed to the top of the charts in their respective divisions.

MIR OWNER RECALLS SUMMERTIME ARMED ROBBERY

Royce and Linda Miller know they were lucky, this time.

The owners and operators of Maryland International Raceway, an IHRA national event drag strip in Budds Creek, Md., were the victims of a robbery at their home. They cannot determine whether the crime was related to their association with the track or not, but regardless, for all the precautions they’ve ever taken in the name of safety, they were confronted by a pair of robbers.

This is the first time Royce has discussed the incident with the drag racing media.

For the Millers, August 18th was no different than any other Tuesday. Royce had finished hosting a test session for NHRA Pro Stock team owner Jim Yates while Linda worked from home tending to the track’s book-keeping chores. The hour wasn’t late, about 8:30 PM.

As the haze of the burned rubber hovered over the idle factory hot rods, unexpectedly to the race fans, an ADRL official jumped the guard wall and directed Kirk into the opposite lane from which he burned out in. Gahm followed suit.
