SPECIALTY EQUIPMENT INDUSTRY REMAINS STRONG AMID SUPPLY CHAIN DISRUPTIONS

Despite ongoing disruptions in the economy, 70% of specialty-equipment manufacturers report sales growth over the past year, according to the new State of the Industry—Fall 2021 report from SEMA.

The report highlights specialty-equipment market trends, including sales performance and expectations, broader economic factors that are affecting the industry, and a future outlook on the role that emerging vehicle technologies may play.

Supply-chain disruptions are affecting the automotive sector, and new-vehicle production is expected to be 7.7 million units lower in 2021 than 2020—tempering the specialty-equipment industry’s optimism regarding its short-term prospects. However, most businesses are maintaining a positive outlook, with more than 80% expecting their sales to be stable or growing over the coming year.

POWERS SCORED PDRA PRO STOCK CHAMPIONSHIP IN HONOR OF SONNY LEONARD

When legendary engine builder Sonny Leonard passed away in January, Chris Powers knew he had to go out and give his best performance yet in the 2021 Professional Drag Racers Association (PDRA) season. Powers, a friend and customer of Leonard’s, went on to win two races in five final-round appearances on his way to claiming his first Liberty’s Gears Extreme Pro Stock presented by AED Competition world championship.

“We wanted to let the world know that Sonny’s Racing Engines is here to stay,” said Powers, who made his Extreme Pro Stock debut in 2017. “Everybody at Sonny’s stepped up: his daughter, Kelly [Ward], his wife, Francis, and his son-in-law, Jr. [Ward]. It means a lot to them and to us to be able to give Sonny's this championship. For my entire team – Rob Bealko and Chuck Samuel and my daughters and my wife and son – it means the world to us to be able to accomplish something at such a high level like this.”

JOSH HART IS ‘PLAYING MONOPOLY IN REAL LIFE’

Josh Hart has a lot of plans, in the racing and non-racing business worlds, and he has been juggling plans for the 2022 Camping World Drag Racing Series and his Brownsburg, Ind.-headquartered race team, as well as expansions for his Ocala, Fla., Burnyzz American Classic Horsepower empire.

The Top Fuel team owner-driver of the R+L Carriers Dragster has purchased a second operation. Like his current, extensively modified equipment, this twin he purchased from Bob Vandergriff Racing. The reason, Hart said, is “to increase my investment in the NHRA, to offer hospitality, and do a better presentation for meet-and-greets for future business partners – and maybe an opportunity for a second driver in the future.”

Moreover, he owns a brand-new Dodge Challenger Mopar DragPak and plans to race it next season in the Factory Stock Showdown class. The original plan was for wife Brittanie Hart to drive it, but she hasn’t had the chance to prepare fully for that yet.

BRADENTON'S VICTOR ALVAREZ TALKS $50k TO WIN PM SHOW AT SNOWBIRD OUTLAW NATIONALS

Excitement continues to build for the 50th annual Snowbird Outlaw Nationals presented by Motion Raceworks, Dec. 3-5 at Bradenton Motorsports Park. Fifty Pro Modified entries are locked in to race for a special $50,000 payday at the event that will also include multiple small-tire classes and a jet car show.

“We've been getting messages and calls every single day about this race,” said Victor Alvarez, the owner of Bradenton Motorsports Park. “The Pro Mod guys in particular just can't wait to get here. It's a big deal. It's always been a historic event, and now with this being the 50th anniversary and this $50,000 payout, it's got everybody talking.”

Alvarez said the support for the 50th annual Snowbirds celebration has been overwhelming. The 50 Pro Mod tech cards sold out in just over 24 hours when they went on sale in late August, while another 20 or so drivers are on the waiting list.
