CLASSIC VIDEO - TAKE A TRIP BACK TO 1971

{loadposition banner2}

Check out this Chrysler-produced video in 1971, which explores not only the racing of the era but also the earliest roots of drag racing. With a cameo from ABC's Keith Jackson, the video takes on a strong base for the history of drag racing.

The video focuses on the development of the Hemi as well as drag tires. The evolvement of the full-bodied stock car. You'll see footage from the 1964 Winternationals, 1966 U.S. Nationals, 1967 Springnationals, 1968 NHRA U.S. Nationals, as well as the 1969 NHRA season. There's also some American Hot Rod Association coverage and a focus on Sox & Martin. The video is chock full of excitement.

CAPPS RELISHES HARD-FOUGHT CHAMPIONSHIP BATTLE WITH TEAM THAT GELLED QUICKLY

If you're going to win a championship, it's best to do it in the season where there's one of the most contested points battles ever.

In a year where the championship points lead changed ten times in twenty races, Ron Capps scored his second career Funny Car title in a season that didn't need manufactured excitement via the Countdown; it all came organically.

Capps, an admitted student of the sport, passed the class in what many speculate to be his final race as part of the Don Schumacher Racing organization.

Capps was locked in a battle with DSR teammate Matt Hagan and lost in a second-round battle with the defending champion. The NAPA Auto Parts-sponsored driver had to sweat it out until one round later when Alexis DeJoria beat Hagan, who needed to win the race to pass Capps.

ROBERT HIGHT ON LEAVING JFR RUMORS: I'M NOT GOING ANYWHERE

Robert Hight made a statement Friday evening at the NHRA Auto Club Finals at Pomona, Calif., taking the provisional No. 1 qualifying position. But he made a bold and absolute statement afterward, refuting the rumor that he is leaving John Force Racing to start his own team.

Hight, who rose from crew member to driver to President of the organization and three-time champion, said, “That’s bullshit, 100 percent. If John gave me the team right now, I wouldn’t take it. I don’t want anything to do with owning a race team.”

He said he wasn’t interested in copying Top Fuel racer Antron Brown, who is making his final appearance this weekend for Don Schumacher Racing (DSR) after 13 years with that organization.

POLLACHECK STEPPING BACK FOR A YEAR

The Pro Stock Motorcycle class will be missing one familiar face in 2022.

Scotty Pollacheck said Friday he is not planning to race next season, opting to take the year off as he and wife Susan are designing a new home and having it built near their current Center Point, Ore., house.

“We have a big project at home, building the house and the shop and everything. And that's going to keep us really busy. So we'll focus on that, and hopefully that all goes like we wanted to. Anything's possible after that, but that's the plan for now, just to stay home and take care of that,” he said before qualifying began Friday.

‘NEW SHERIFF’ STEVE TORRENCE GIVES TOP FUEL CLASS WHAT-FOUR

Steve Torrence has a fourth consecutive Top Fuel championship and 51st victory after breaking away from Brittany Force’s challenge in the first round of Sunday’s NHRA Auto Club Finals at Pomona, Calif., escaping scary encounters with Doug Kalitta and Cameron Ferré, then defeating Antron Brown in the final round.

And now – partly tongue-in-cheek – he’s relishing a new role in the class.

CAPPS SURVIVES SCARE TO WIN SECOND FUNNY CAR CHAMPIONSHIP AS TASCA TAKES WALLY AT NHRA SEASON FINALE

What a roller-coaster ride of an afternoon for Ron Capps.

In an encapsulation of his season as a whole, Capps watched as the championship slipped through his fingertips in one round, only to gain it back moments later thanks to an assist from another driver. In the end, Capps was able to hold on to earn his second career NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series championship in Funny Car despite an early exit at the Auto Club NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.
