BOB BODE HOPEFUL HIS SON CAN PROGRESS TOWARD GETTING HIS NITRO FC LICENSE

Veteran nitro Funny Car driver Bob Bode competed in NHRA’s Mello Yello Series season-opening race – the Winternationals in Pomona, Calif., Feb. 6-9 and had decent results.

The Illinois driver qualified No. 12 and then was upended by the legendary John Force in the first round.

Bode hasn’t been on the track since the COVID-19 pandemic halted Mello Yello Series Racing March 12.

In the latest revised scheduled, racing is supposed to begin July 11-12 with NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis. That event is scheduled to be followed up with another race in Indy July 18-19. Nitro Funny Cars are competing at both events and Bode will be there.

LEGENDS: THE SERIES TRIBUTE SONG NOMINATED FOR COUNTRY MUSIC AWARD

Laura Black-Wines has a gift for pouring her heart into her work as a songwriter, and it’s paying dividends.

Black-Wines’ song “A Legend Will Live On: A Tribute to Darrell Russell” was written specifically for a CompetitionPlus.com video piece on the late Top Fuel racer. It is among the tunes chosen for consideration as Song of the Year (Modern Country) for a Josie Award. The list of award nominees was released Thursday morning, and the winners will be announced as part of a live show in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., on Saturday, Sept. 5.

The Josies, now in their sixth year, are given to independent musicians, writers, and producers. Black-Wines’ song “Driver’s Seat” about her drag racing father, Bo, earned three nominations last year and won for Best Video.

“Last night I just happened to see them post that they had the list almost done,” Black-Wines said Tuesday morning from her home in Park Hills, Mo. “This morning when I woke up I checked and the list was up and was like, ‘Oh, my gosh, you’ve got to be kidding me!’

KUCH TO RETURN AS FOLEY-LEWIS CREW CHIEF

Veteran crew chief Doug Kuch has signed on to tune Doug Foley’s Top Fuel dragster through the 2021 NHRA season, Foley Lewis Racing announced today. Kuch previously worked with Foley Lewis Racing during the team’s last major stint in NHRA Top Fuel over 10 years ago.

“We’re really excited to have Doug Kuch working with us again,” said Doug Foley, who made his return to Top Fuel in February after a nine-year hiatus. “We initially planned to use our first few races of the season to get back up to speed, then really get competitive in the later half of the year. Now that our season will be shortened, we need to accelerate our learning curve. We feel like Doug will help us accomplish that goal.”

Kuch first tuned Foley’s Top Fuel car in IHRA competition during the mid-2000s. He helped Foley win the 2004 IHRA Pro Rookie of the Year award, the same year he was named the Crew Chief of the Year. Foley won three IHRA national events that year with Kuch calling the shots. The duo then experienced success in the NHRA side of the world in the late 2000s, regularly qualifying well and winning rounds in part-time competition.
