INJURED TASCA CREW MEMBERS TO MAKE FULL RECOVERY

Kyle Mullins, one of two Bob Tasca Racing crew members injured last weekend at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park near Phoenix, is here at Auto Club Raceway, back at work building the rack and bolting heads onto the Funny Car.

The other, Jim Underco, is home following a hospital stay to treat – in Tasca’s words – “second-degree burns over a good part of his side and back.” Tasca said it’s “obviously very painful and he's fighting through it. He's more worried about coming back out here than he is trying to get himself better.

Mullins, he said, “got a cut on the lip and a cut over his eye, but he didn't miss a day of work.

A MIXED DAY OF EMOTIONS YIELDS A NO. 1 QUALIFIER FOR JEGGIE COUGHLIN

Jeg Coughlin Jr., one of the more accomplished drivers in the Pro Stock ranks, saved the last session of Pro Stock qualifying at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals to produce the quickest run of the weekend. The Jegs.com-sponsored driver reeled off a 6.525 second elapsed time at 210.64 miles per hour to qualify No. 1.

As impressive as the run was, it would only serve as the second most newsworthy item in his day's portfolio.

"This is going to be my final full professional season here in Pro Stock," Coughlin admitted "I've done this Pro Stock racing ... I let the clutch off for the first time ever in 1997 in Dallas, and I've let the clutch out every year since then. Not all in full seasons, all but like two or three years of that. So I've had just a magnificent run."

When his back is against the wall, that's when Matt Hagan shines the brightest.

And that was on full display Saturday evening at the NHRA’s grand season opener as Hagan lost - and then gained right back - the top qualifier award to pace the Funny Car field at the 60th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

BRITTANY FORCE FLAWLESS ON SATURDAY, TAKES TOP FUEL NO. 1

Imagine training for a home run derby without taking full swings. Or preparing for an Olympic sprint without actually running at your top speed. Or how about gearing up for a run at the Masters Golf Tournament at your local putt-putt course.

Now, imagine winning the derby, taking home the gold medal and putting on the green jacket.
