UNIVERSITY OF NORTHWEST OHIO DRAG CLUB IS BUILDING AN ’85 CAMARO

 

The Team at Race Part Solutions has always had a soft spot for the underdogs, the creative thinkers who use brainpower to overcome a situation vs throwing good money after bad in an effort to problem-solve. Enter the University of Northwestern Ohio Drag Club, an extracurricular club that helps with extra education for students who have a serious interest in drag racing. The majority of the students work a full-time job in addition to classroom studies and still are able to find time to participate in the drag club activities. The club is currently building a 1985 Camaro with a 5.3 liter LS swapped into it, a Turbo 400 transmission and FTI Torque Converter.

This might be about as close as you get to those early days of Pro Modified racing before there was volatile doorslammer division became a professional category.

FRANK IACONIO JR. DIES IN TWO-CAR ACCIDENT

 

Frank Iaconio Jr., 34, and son of iconic NHRA Pro Stock racer Frank Iaconio died on Thursday, January 2, 2020, as a result of injuries sustained in a two-car crash on Route 206 in New Jersey.

Iaconio was an engine builder at his father’s Frank Iaconio Racing Engines shop.

PRO TO HOLD THEIR ANNUAL PRESEASON TEST IN LAS VEGAS

 

The Professional Racers Owners Organization, Inc. [PRO] have announced they will hold their annual preseason test session Thursday, January 30, 2019, through Saturday, February 1 at The Strip in Las Vegas.

The private test session will be open to Top Fuel, Funny Car, and Pro Stock entries with track prep handled by NHRA personnel. On hand will be the tractor, sprayer, and tire rotator machine. LVMS will also provide its safety and emergency personnel.

MILLICAN, KLOEBER REUNITED WITH OLD DRAGSTERS BUILT AHEAD OF THEIR TIME

 

Clay Millican and Mike Kloeber hadn’t laid eyes on a pair of old friends for more than 13 years when they were reunited in McLeansboro, Ill., as autumn 2019 approached.

Yet when each racer walked into the room and saw those with whom they had enjoyed record-breaking performances, it was almost as if they’d never been apart.

Those ‘friends’ were the Top Fuel dragsters campaigned by Millican, Kloeber, and their team in 2001 and 2002 -- vehicles they won the first of what would eventually be six consecutive IHRA Top Fuel crowns.

FIVE 2019 NHRA CHAMPIONS ARE FRANK HAWLEY GRADUATES

 

Two-time NHRA Funny Car champion and successful drag racing school instructor Frank Hawley isn’t the type to brag; however, it’s difficult to ignore the obvious.

Of the 2019 champions crowned in both the Mello Yello and Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, five were past Frank Hawley Drag Racing School graduates.

The names read like a who’s who of drag racing success. Steve Torrence, Robert Hight, Erica Enders, Steve Jackson, and Megan Meyer all graduated with a drag racing degree.

2019 WAS A BANNER YEAR FOR THE JEGS TEAM

 

Last season was a banner year for the iconic Jegs.com team. For the Delaware, Ohio-based team, the season resulted in two championships and a pair of runner-up finishes.

Third-gen driver Troy Coughlin Jr. emerged as the MVP by collecting his second straight regional championship in Top Alcohol Dragster. Uncle Mike Coughlin was the second most successful with his third Division 3 title, this time in Top Dragster. On the big stage of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, Jeg Coughlin Jr. finished second in the national Pro Stock points for the second consecutive year, and Troy Jr.'s sister Paige managed to earn the No. 2 ranking in Division 3 in Super Comp despite carrying a full load at Miami (Ohio) University.

A DRAG STRIP BUYS A GOLF COURSE?

 

Officials for World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway in Madison, Illinois, today announced the purchase of Gateway National Golf Links, the 220-acre golf course and clubhouse adjacent to the speedway. The purchase of Gateway National allows the 380-acre motorsports complex to expand its entertainment holdings. Gateway National is considered the top public golf course in the St. Louis area, boasting a 7,178-yard links-style course with bent grass fairways. Golf course operations will not be interrupted.

Entech Oil and Lubricants was named as the Official Oil & Lubricant of Funny Car Chaos for the 2020 championship season. VP of National Sales and Motorsports Marketing, Scott Cousimano, has big plans for his increased involvement with the series, not only the on-site oil and lubricant supplier, but also a participant with his ‘Nitro Mafia’ nostalgia funny car.
