TORRENCE RACES TO SECOND CONSECUTIVE VICTORY WITH STRONG SOUTHERN NATIONALS EFFORT

Don't look now, Top Fuel competitors, but Steve Torrence has heated up.

CAPPS SNARES FIRST FUNNY CAR WIN OF SEASON AT ATLANTA

PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE STAR ANDREW HINES KEEPS ROLLING IN ATLANTA

MIKE SALINAS TO RETURN IN VIRGINIA

Las Vegas Top Fuel winner Mike Salinas was conspicuous by his absence in Atlanta. Salinas, who has two No. 1 qualifiers and came into the Southern Nationals fourth in the points, had business to tend to in California that kept him away.

Salinas owns Valley Services in San Jose, Calif., a waste-disposal, dumpster rental and event-rental service company, hence the name of his team, Scrappers Racing.

MATUSEK ROLLING WITH THE PUNCHES OF CHANGE

The 2019 season of the E3 Spark Plugs NHRA Pro Mod Series has been something of a different experience for Steve Matusek, who joined the Elite Motorsports team at the conclusion of last year. Matusek and longtime friend Danny Rowe had raced as teammates for the previous five seasons, and when Rowe opted to step away from Pro Mod in order to focus more on business, a new opportunity was presented to nine-year Pro Mod veteran Matusek.

He and Elite Motorsports team owner Richard Freeman joined forces and rounded out a powerfully capable group of drivers. The Pro Mod brand of Elite Motorsports also includes diverse and decorated drivers Alex Laughlin and Erica Enders.

Castellana ran 5.825-seconds at 248.29 mph in his supercharged Al-Anabi Performance Chevrolet Camaro, picking up the final-round win when Jose Gonzalez suffered a red-light start.

WILKERSON COMES TO THE RESCUE, ALMOST

Fans witnessed a pretty cool moment on the starting line toward the end of Funny Car qualifying during the NHRA Southern Nationals. Blake Alexander's car wouldn't fire, and while Paul Lee waited patiently in the other lane, Alexander's team thrashed in an effort to get the engine started.
