ROUND BY ROUND RESULTS FROM 2018 ROUTE 66 NATS

Final round-by-round results from the 21st annual JEGS Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway, the ninth of 24 events in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series:

A CHALLENGING SEASON, A PASSING GRADE FOR TASCA

Bob Tasca III says he would have bet his house and everything he owns that his Motorcraft Ford Funny Car would have won more than one eliminations round when the team arrived to compete in the ninth Mello Yello event of the year.

Fortunately, no one took the bet or the winner of four NHRA event titles would be homeless this weekend.

Tasca returned to full-time Funny Car racing with a new car and new team. He will start eliminations Sunday with a 1-8 record and ranked 13th in championship points.

HINES HOLDS OFF HARD-CHARGING ARANA TO TAKE GREEN HAT IN CHICAGO

Andrew Hines has been on a roll this season and he doesn’t appear to show any signs of slowing down.

After nearly a one-month layoff for the Pro Stock Motorcycle class, Hines picked right up where he left off, earning his second number one qualifier of the year and 42nd overall Saturday at the 21st annual JEGS Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway.

ANDERSON PERFECT IN CHICAGO, EARNS 98TH CAREER NUMBER ONE QUALIFIER

Four up, four down.

Greg Anderson was untouchable during qualifying to open the first two days of racing at Route 66 Raceway in Chicago, recording low elapsed time of every round and setting himself up nicely for Sunday in earning his 98th career number one qualifier Saturday at the 21st annual JEGS Route 66 NHRA Nationals.

JOHN FORCE UNINJURED IN CHICAGO CRASH

After a dreadful start to the 2018 season, 16-time Funny Car champion John Force appeared to have his volatile Funny Car back under control. Or so he thought.

Force, during the Q-4 session at the Jegs NHRA Route 66 Nationals, was on a run when the car inexplicably took a right into the right retaining wall, where it bounced off and on multiple times and shooting out a wall of flames. The car came to a stop, and a dazed Force emerged.

ZIZZO PLAYS HARD, IN HOME OR AWAY RACES

T.J. Zizzo was at the track Friday by Noon, and by his estimation was five hours too late. Friday’s qualifying wasn’t scheduled until 5 PM.

“We’re getting everyone back into the swing of things,” Zizzo admitted. “We always are working on this race car, every Tuesday, every Sunday, all year long no matter how many races we go to. There’s always something to do on these race cars. But we’re getting re-familiar with awnings, extension cords, air hoses and pit mats. We’re kind of getting organized and up to speed and trying to just get last minute details taken care of before we fire this thing at 4:30.”

ON-TRACK INCIDENT DURING TOP SPORTSMAN ELIMINATIONS

Top Sportsman racer, Sean Brady of Prospect Heights, Ill., was involved in an on-track incident during the second round of eliminations at the JEGS Route 66 NHRA Nationals on Saturday.

TORRENCE, HAGAN, ANDERSON & HINES KEEP NO. 1 QUALIFYING POSITIONS IN JOLIET

The 2018 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season continued Saturday as Steve Torrence held on to the Top Fuel No. 1 qualifying position at the 21st annual JEGS Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway.

Matt Hagan (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also qualified first in their respective categories at the ninth of 24 events on the 2018 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.

HAGAN BACK ON TOP, TAKES PROVISIONAL FUNNY CAR LEAD IN CHICAGO

Everything looked so promising for Matt Hagan when the season began.

A win and a number one qualifier to open the year in Pomona had Hagan and team in good spirits as they began the 2018 NHRA Mello Yello campaign in the best possible position - on top.
