DELAGO, THE FREE AGENT, ENJOYS A WEEKEND AT THE TRACK

Friday at Heartland Park - Topeka, noted tuner/crewchief  Tommy DeLago made his way around the pit area. He looked every bit like a soldier without an army.

DeLago was taking in the sights and sounds of the nitro circus minus any responsibilities. He was released from his tuning role at Kalitta Motorsports earlier this week.

"I’ve learned this weekend that I actually have more people that care about me and that have been taking care of me all weekend," DeLago said with a smile. "It’s actually been a pretty good weekend so far."

NO. 1 QUALIFIERS MILLICAN, C. FORCE AND KRAMER ADVANCE ON RAIN-SHORTENED ELIMINATIONS

The Mello Yello Drag Racing Series eliminations at the 30th annual Menards NHRA Heartland Nationals were postponed by NHRA officials due to inclement weather conditions following an eight-hour rain delay at the start of the day.

Racing in the Top Fuel, Funny Car, and Pro Stock categories as well as the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and the E3 Spark Plugs NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series eliminations will be completed on Monday.

MILLICAN ACCIDENTALLY QUALIFIES NO. 1, JUMPS FROM LAST TO FIRST IN Q3

It’s not very often you hear of a driver accidentally falling into success.

But that is exactly what happened to Clay Millican Saturday afternoon at Heartland Motorsports Park as the driver of the Parts Plus/Great Clips/Strutmaster Top Fuel machine quite literally lucked into the No. 1 spot and held that position for his fourth green hat of the season and second in a row at the 30th annual Menards NHRA Heartland Nationals presented by Minties.

KRAMER EARNS SECOND CAREER NO. 1 START AT TOPEKA

Deric Kramer could really get used to this green hat thing.

After more than seven years getting his feet wet in the Pro Stock ranks, the 32-year-old out of Sterling, Colorado took the next big step in his career earlier this year by combining his physical abilities with the mechanical abilities of a KB Racing powerhouse and the results speak for themselves.

IT WAS MORE THAN SWITCHING TIRES FOR STEVIE JACKSON

Stevie "Fast" Jackson, if anything, is resourceful.

The trash-talking, fast-driving doorslammer driver from Georgia was in the final round of the NGK NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at zMax Dragway when he lost control of his supercharged Camaro and crashed. He was uninjured, but his race car was mortally wounded.

As Jackson returned to his Evans, Ga.-based shop on the next day, he pondered his next move. He could attempt to repair the mangled race car, which would take well beyond the three weeks until the next race on his schedule. Jackson then pondered a new car, but even working around the clock at the chassis would come up weeks short.

FREEMAN STILL BEATING THE DRUM FOR PRO STOCK'S FUTURE

Richard Freeman has been steady in his support of the need to get more cars out to race Pro Stock. This weekend he's returned to driving even though he prefers to watch the drag races from behind the car as a team owner.

Freeman is driving for V. Gaines, one of the former Pro Srock regulars who decided to park his operation back in 2016.

"V Gaines and I have been talking and he’s got some business stuff to take care of," Freeman explained.  "We need to get him back out here, that’s the main thing. He gave me an opportunity to drive his car so we’re going to go out here and have some fun and see what we can do."

MILLICAN, C. FORCE AND KRAMER SECURE TOP QUALIFYING SPOTS AT TOPEKA

Qualifying concluded Saturday as Clay Millican drove to the Top Fuel No. 1 qualifier at the 30th annual Menards NHRA Heartland Nationals presented by Minties NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series race at Heartland Motorsports Park in Topeka, Kan.

Courtney Force (Funny Car) and Deric Kramer (Pro Stock) are also No. 1 qualifiers in their respective categories at the eighth of 24 events on the 2018 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.
