TEN YEARS OF ZMAX DRAGWAY ACCOMPLISHMENTS TO CELEBRATE

 

Charlotte Motor Speedway’s illustrious history includes an unrivaled collection of famous “firsts,” with one of the most prominent being zMAX Dragway’s status as the first four-lane drag strip on the NHRA schedule. Since its revolutionary first race in 2008, “the Bellagio of drag strips” has celebrated a decade of unforgettable, nitro-fueled racing action. With the April 27-29 NGK Spark Plugs NHRA Four-Wide Nationals rapidly approaching, here’s a timeline of memorable moments at zMAX Dragway.

UNFAVORABLE WEATHER DELAYS TRACK RECONSTRUCTION AT SUMMIT MOTORSPORTS PARK

While Miller Brothers Construction and Smith Paving and Excavating have been working countless hours to complete a $1.6 million track reconstruction project at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio, unfavorable weather has hampered the progress.

As a result, the 37th Annual Spring Warm-Up on April 28-29, which was to be the season-opener at the park, and the Lingenfelter Performance Engineering Wednesday Fun Night on May 2 have been canceled.

BRITTANY EMOTIONAL IN HOUSTON TOP FUEL WIN

Brittany Force could hardly hold back the emotions as she exited her dragster Sunday afternoon.

In one day, the defending NHRA Top Fuel champion managed to erase what has been a season of heartbreak, frustration, and disappointment with four consecutive round wins at the NHRA Springnationals at Royal Purple Raceway, located outside of Houston, Texas.

TODD STAYS HOT, WINS FUNNY CAR TITLE IN HOUSTON

Before Sunday, J.R.Todd had never beaten reigning world champion Robert Hight in NHRA nitro Funny Car eliminations in four attempts.

That’s not the case anymore.

 

HARTFORD CELEBRATES FIRST CAREER NHRA PRO STOCK WIN

The long, long wait is over for Matt Hartford.

Hartford debuted in NHRA’s Pro Stock class in 2006 and finally in his 80th race in the class he captured his first career Wally Sunday at the Spring Nationals near Houston.

J. WHITELEY RACES TO PRO MOD VICTORY AT NHRA SPRINGNATIONALS

Jim Whiteley drove to victory on Sunday during the E3 Spark Plugs NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by J&A Service portion of the NHRA SpringNationals at Royal Purple Raceway. This weekend’s Pro Mod racing, presented by Tige Boats, is the second of 12 events this season.

Whiteley ran a 5.834-second pass at 239.14 mph in his J&A Services 1969 Yenko Camaro to take down Rick Hord in the final round and earn his first victory since Houston 2016 and second of his career. He defeated Mike Castellana, Khalid AlBalooshi and Steve Jackson on his way to the win.

B. FORCE, TODD AND HARTFORD ARE VICTORIOUS AT NHRA SPRINGNATIONALS

J.R. Todd captured his first career back-to-back Funny Car victory Sunday afternoon at the 31st annual NHRA SpringNationals at Royal Purple Raceway.

Brittany Force (Top Fuel) and Matt Hartford (Pro Stock) were also victorious in their respective categories at the fifth of 24 events on the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.

TF HARLEY RIDER TRANSPORTED FOLLOWING ON-TRACK INCIDENT

Top Fuel Harley rider Brian Jernigan of Cypress, TX was involved in an on-track incident during the first round of eliminations at the NHRA SpringNationals in Baytown, Texas. Jernigan made contact with the right-hand wall, maintained control and brought the Top Fuel Harley Davidson motorcycle to a stop before being attended to by onsite safety personnel. Jernigan has been transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.
