NMCA DRIVERS WRAP 2017 SEASON WITH WORLD STREET FINALS AT INDIANAPOLIS

The NMCA’s finest did not disappoint at the 16th Annual SDPC Raceshop NMCA World Street Finals, Sept. 21-24 at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, Indiana, as they provided plenty of powerful performances, holeshot wins, and championship-deciding drama.

In VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod, fourteen of sixteen drivers motored to 3-second elapsed-times in qualifying, and while Jason Hamstra led the field with a 3.83 in his Camaro, his loss in the second round paved the way to the final that featured Steve Summers and his Camaro and Mark Luton and his Mustang. There, Summers secured the win with a 3.80 to Luton’s 3.92, and took a trip to the Aerospace Components Winner’s Circle.

FRY, GRAVES AND BATES HEADLINE TULSA NITRO NATS WINNERS

It was a nitro filled affair at the Osage Casino Tulsa Raceway Park Nitro Nationals, held September 22-23rd in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This highly anticipated weekend was substantial in many ways, most of all with the return of Top Fuel to the historic facility. The fuelers were joined with the DRO Nostalgia Funny Car series, NHRA Heritage Series A/Fuel competitors and of course gassers, junior fuelers, pin-up girl contests, live music and more in a wildly entertaining weekend.

Nine NHRA Heritage Series Top Fuel dragsters made the tow and the top points contenders felt the pressure. This, the fourth of five points race this season, would prove a critical weekend for those in hopes of a title run. Jim Murphy's Roland Leong tuned WWII fueler came into the battle with a 46 point lead over this year's March Meet winner Mendy Fry in the High Speed Motorsports entry led by Tom Shelar. After two sessions of qualifying, Jim Young and the "Young Guns" Wisconsin based team led the field with a 5.74 elapsed time followed by Jim Murphy and Mendy Fry who both earned their spots with a respectable 5.87s. Adam Sorokin's 5.92 rounded out the top half of the eight car eliminator in the Champion Speed Shop entry.

TEMPEST IN A ‘TREE’-POT: SAVOIE ERUPTS AT ARANA IN STARTING-LINE SQUABBLE

Hector Arana Jr. said, “It was nothing.”

But it was a move that certainly meant something to reigning Pro Stock Motorcycle champion Jerry Savoie, owner of the White Alligator Racing team that includes L.E. Tonglet.

The hot temperature and a hot motor combined to make Savoie hot under the collar Sunday at the NHRA Dodge Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway, near Reading, Pa.

CAPPS WINS MAPLE GROVE, TAKES FUNNY CAR POINTS LEAD

This turned to be a fantastic weekend for Ron Capps.

The reigning NHRA nitro Funny Car world champion not only won at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pa., but he also retook the points lead with four races to go in the Countdown to the Championship.

FORCE TAKES BOLD STEP TOWARD FIRST TOP FUEL CHAMPIONSHIP

The Countdown to the Championship started last weekend with “The Shake-up at Charlotte,” as top-ranked Top Fuel racers tumbled from contention early in eliminations.

The NHRA Dodge Nationals, near Reading, Pa., Sunday was “The Redemption At Reading” for Antron Brown, who made the semifinals, and Steve Torrence, who reclaimed the points lead from Doug Kalitta. But for Tony Schumacher and Leah Pritchett, the visit to Maple Grove Raceway, near Reading, Pa., was “The Rerun At Reading.”

TF ROOKIE AUDREY WORM RACES INSPIRED

Before Audrey Worm came along, the fastest creature in Grantville, Pa., was one of the Thoroughbreds at Penn National Race Course. Worm was born 20 years after the horse-racing track opened, but the 25-year-old (who, incidentally, used to work in security at the Penn National casino) has the stronger horsepower now, 10,000 strong.

She was set to make her professional debut, and her only appearance this year, in the Leverich Family-owned dragster that Smax Smith has been racing at selected events. Smith loaned her the Top Fuel car with at least one lucky round on it – he defeated Tony Schumacher at Epping, N.H., in June. And Worm, fresh from her licensing process, had intended to make the most of the opportunity.

READING HAS PRESENTED CHALLENGES FOR HAGAN THE LAST TWO SEASONS

During the Reading weekend last year, Matt Hagan was dashing about the eastern half of the United States, trying to put his Mopar Express Lane / Rocky Boots Dodge Charger at the top of the field, then flying home to Southwestern Virginia to be present at the birth of his third child, Tucker. He aced both assignments. Hagan led the field, flew home Saturday night, returned Sunday morning to race, and advanced to the semifinals.

KRAWIEC AS HOT AS THE WEATHER, RUNS BIKE WINNING STREAK TO THREE

The weather at Reading, Pa., was startlingly hot this entire weekend, and Pro Stock Motorcycle racer Eddie Krawiec was equally sizzling.

But that wasn’t startling at all.

BUTNER EARNS PRO STOCK WALLY AT DODGE NATIONALS

On Friday and Saturday, NHRA Pro Stock driver Bo Butner had the best car at Maple Grove Raceway.

That didn't change Sunday.
