NHRA’s ANGIE SMITH HEADS INTO COUNTDOWN WITH BACKING FROM DENSO SPARK PLUGS

DENSO Products and Services Americas, Inc., will serve as the lead sponsor of Pro Stock Motorcycle racer Angie Smith at the upcoming NHRA Carolina Nationals. The Sept. 15-17 races take place at Smith’s hometown racetrack, zMAX Dragway in Concord, N.C.

The event is the first of the Countdown to the Championship, the six final race weekends of the 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. Only the top 10 competitors qualify for the Countdown, based on total points earned over 10 hard-fought Pro Stock Motorcycle contests leading up to the final races.

TANNER GRAY TO UNVEIL NEW LOOK CAMARO AT ZMAX DRAGWAY

Pro Stock rookie Tanner Gray has already made his mark on the quarter mile, winning four times in his first 16 races.

The new wrap on his Chevy Camaro that he will be sporting at the NHRA Carolina Nationals this weekend, and throughout the Countdown, will pay tribute to his racing experience before he took to the drag strip. Gray began his racing career in circle track track and kart racing.

MWPMS NAMES DAVID COOK NEW RACE DIRECTOR

The Mid-West Pro Mod Series (MWPMS), based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, announced that it has named David “Cookie” Cook as its new race director. Cook also will oversee all track preparation efforts for the growing eighth-mile drag racing organization that typically appears as a supplemental draw for each host track’s regularly scheduled special events.

“I’m pretty excited about this,” Cook said. “There are a lot of race teams based in this part of the country but there’s not a lot of national touring series that come over this far, so I think the Mid-West Pro Mod Series really fills a void. It’s already well on its way to becoming one of the best Pro Mod series in the country and I’m ready to do whatever I can to help it get there as soon as possible.”

TWO DIE IN DODGE CHALLENGER HELLCAT CRASH

Two friends, who were test driving a Dodge Challenger Hellcat at the Central Colorado Regional Airport in Buena Vista, Colo., Sept. 8, both died in a high-speed crash when their car sped off the end of the runway and across a ravine.

The men had permission to use the runway, Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze said in an article posted in the Denver Post Sept. 11. They likely were driving faster than 100 miles per hour before their tragic wreck.

FRANK HAWLEY’S DRAG RACING SCHOOL ESCAPES MAJOR HURRICANE IRMA DAMAGE

Millions of people in the state of Florida were impacted by Hurricane Irma this past weekend.

The hurricane barreled into Florida on Sunday, crashing through the Florida Keys before making a second landfall near Naples on the Gulf Coast and setting a course for Georgia.

Frank Hawley, former world champion NHRA nitro Funny Car driver, and longtime drag racing school instructor, told CompetitionPlus.com Monday morning his Frank Hawley Drag Racing School at Gainesville (Fla.) Raceway escaped major damage.

MID-WEST PRO MOD SERIES CREATED TO SUPPORT TRACKS, SPONSORS AND RACERS

Drag racing is a sport built on passion, but passion alone can't keep the lights on, employees paid and the track gates open. For that a track needs to be profitable, offering a facility and events that make its customers-racers, fans and sponsors-want to come back time after time. That's why Osage Casino Tulsa Raceway Park co-owner Keith Haney helped create the Mid-West Pro Mod Series (MWPMS), a professional drag racing organization that delivers a generous sponsor package, star drivers, immaculate cars and an unrivaled eighth-mile show to complement each host track's special event.

"We're not trying to be the whole show, we want to come in and help boost a track's already established event, such as their Night of Fire or Labor Day race, things like that," Haney explains.

KINSLEY PERFORMS HIS WAY INTO INDY TOP FUEL STATS, LORE

Three Texans shared the Top Fuel spotlight with their own personal drama -  in spectacularly strong, spectacularly calamitous, and spectacularly inspirational fashion – at last weekend’s NHRA Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis.

Steve Torrence was the mighty one, ultimately, commandeering the $100,000 winner’s share of the Traxxas Shootout purse Saturday, winning the race Monday, and reclaiming the points lead for the start of the Countdown to the Championship.

Tony Schumacher, the Indianapolis dominator, reached the Traxxas final round but closed qualifying with a startling engine explosion that left him unhurt but saying his team would have to replace every part and piece on the dragster. He returned race day morning and powered his way to the semifinal round.

GAYDOSH WITHDRAWS FROM CHARLOTTE; PARTS WAYS WITH GRAY MOTORSPORTS

Just days before the NHRA Carolina Nationals at zMAX Dragway, Pro Stock driver John Gaydosh announced he has to withdraw from the event.
