TODD SNARES FIRST U.S. NATIONALS NITRO FUNNY CAR CROWN

The Kalitta Motorsports mosh pit was alive and well Monday afternoon.

The team was in the midst of a wild celebration after its driver J.R. Todd captured the title in the nitro Funny Car class at the prestigious U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway.

The irony was the stuff that the U.S. Nationals is made of. Making his first start at Indianapolis, Kebin Kinsley knocked off semifinal opponent Tony Schumacher, the dominator of this Labor Day classic with 10 victories who reached the final round in his own first event here and his first dragster event ever, in 1996.

Kinsley, who had just a single elimination round-win to his Top Fuel credit in Roger Hennen’s “Road Rage” entry, began his day by upsetting Clay Millican, the No. 1 qualifier. He took out another champion, Shawn Langdon, in the quarterfinals.

RELAXED KRAWIEC SCORES SECOND INDIANAPOLIS PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE VICTORY

After NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle racer Eddie Krawiec won the 2014 U.S. Nationals, his favorite keepsake from the experience wasn’t the Wally statue, although having it among his awards certainly was gratifying.

What he cherished most was a photo that National Dragster’s Marc Gewertz snapped. It silhouetted Krawiec and young daughter Kayden, holding hands and walking down the same dragstrip on which he had defeated final-round opponent Jerry Savoie.

Drew Skillman can now make a huge check off his bucket list.

The driver of the Ray Skillman Chevy Camaro won the prestigious U.S. Nationals Monday.

FRIGO WINS FIRST NHRA J&A SERVICE PRO MOD EVENT AT U.S. NATIONALS

Sidnei Frigo raced to his first career NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series victory Monday at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. This weekend’s Pro Mod racing, presented by JEGS.com, is the ninth of 12 events on the 2017 schedule.

Frigo raced a 6.318-second pass at 203.68 mph in his Artivinco Racing / Fuel Tech late model Corvette to defeat veteran Troy Coughlin who ran a 9.079 at 122.76 in his JEG’s Mail Order Corvette.

TORRENCE, TODD, SKILLMAN AND KRAWIEC WINNERS AT CHEVROLET PERFORMANCE U.S. NATIONALS

Steve Torrence piloted his Capco Contractors dragster to the Top Fuel victory Monday at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals, the world’s biggest drag race, at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.

J.R. Todd (Funny Car), Drew Skillman (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also victorious at the 18th event of 24 on the 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Series Drag Racing Series schedule.

LAGANA BROTHERS HONORED WITH MIKE AIELLO AWARD

Bobby and Dom Lagana accepted 2017 the Mike Aiello "Spirit of Drag Racing" Award during pre-race ceremonies Monday at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.
 
CompetitionPlus.com owner and publisher Bobby Bennett made the presentation to the Lagana brothers for their longtime dedication to and passion for drag racing and their outreach to the sport’s community. The Mike Aiello Award recipient is someone who has persevered and remained positive in spite of hardship.
