PRITCHETT BLASTS PAST KALITTA FOR TOP FUEL NO. 1 QUALIFYING POSITION

Does Doug Kalitta drive an Avis rental car? The company says it’s No. 2 and it tries harder.

Kalitta’s cargo planes haul thoroughbred horses from the Kentucky Derby to the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes. But maybe Kalitta would have been a perfect jockey for Alydar, the colt that had the dubious distinction of finishing a close second to Affirmed in all three 1977 Triple Crown events, a feat that never occurred before or since.

THE MELTDOWN DRAGS IN PHOTOS

During the course of more than 50 years in operation, Byron Dragway has been home to many memorable events, from the Manufacturer’s Funny Car Showdown of the 1970’s, to the Byron Bracket Nationals to the Power Wheelstand Championships beginning in the early 2000’s.

KRAWIEC HITS MARK WITH HARLEY-DAVIDSON STREET ROD, LEADS BIKE FIELD

Eddie Krawiec scored a breakthrough for the Vance & Hines Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson team’s new Street Rod, dominating Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying for the NHRA Mopar Mile-High Nationals.

It was less significant to Krawiec that he earned his second No. 1 start of the season and 35th overall. What mattered most to him this weekend at Bandimere Speedway was seeing the wholly new design perform the way team boss Matt Hines and the diligent crew had planned all along.

SKILLMAN’S PRO STOCK PERFORMANCE BELIES HIS SELF-DESCRIPTIONS

Because of rain delays that repeatedly interrupted the start of the NHRA Mopar Mile-High Nationals, the Pro Stock class had just one qualifying chance Friday, and Drew Skillman made the most of it.

The suburban Indianapolis racer from Bargersville seized the top qualifying position Friday with a 6.925-second elapsed time on the Bandimere Speedway quarter-mile and showed the consistency of his Ray Skillman-branded Camaro by matching that early Saturday. He shaved one-thousandth of a second from that later Saturday and topped the order with a 6.924. Skillman did pick up some speed in the second session, improving his 197.94-mph clocking to 198.26 and finally a 198.29.

PRITCHETT, C. FORCE, SKILLMAN AND KRAWIEC SECURE TOP QUALIFYING POSITIONS IN DENVER

Leah Pritchett powered to the Top Fuel No. 1 qualifying position Saturday at the 38th annual Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway.

Courtney Force (Funny Car), Drew Skillman (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) are also No. 1 qualifiers in their respective categories at the 14th of 24 events on the 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.

KALITTA OVERCOMES GLITCH, OVERTAKES TORRENCE ON DAY 1 AT DENVER

Doug Kalitta was the buzz of both qualifying sessions Friday at Bandimere Speedway at the Mopar Mile-High Nationals – for completely different reasons.

The Mac Tools Dragster driver went from the outhouse to the penthouse, from not being able to start his car to not allowing anyone to stop it from dominating.

FORCES OUT IN FORCE FRIDAY IN FUNNY CAR ACTION AT BANDIMERE SPEEDWAY

The Forces were out in force Friday at Bandimere Speedway near Denver for the start of the NHRA’s Mopar Mile-High Nationals.

Courtney Force and her Advance Auto Parts Camaro earned both ends of the track Funny Car record in the opening qualifying session, covering the 1,000-foot Morrison, Colo., course in 3.899 seconds at 301.87 mph for the provisional No. 1 qualifying position as the John Force Racing trio topped the order at 1-2-3.
