STEVE JOHNSON BECAME AN NHRA SUPERSTAR BY FIRST BECOMING THE MAN IN THE BOX

Many of today's top drag racers had humble beginnings.

Nothing says humble like having your race vehicle air-freighted to the race in a crate, and parked underneath a flatbed trailer.

Pro Stock Motorcycle veteran Steve Johnson has yet to find anyone who can match his initial foray into the world of major league drag racing with the NHRA.

CHICAGO SWEET AGAIN FOR BRITTANY FORCE

Last season, Brittany Force celebrated her birthday by earning the No. 1 qualifying spot for the Route 66 Nationals in record-setting fashion.

After accomplishing a similar feat Saturday in the Monster Energy Chevrolet, Force hopes to celebrate in style Sunday evening with a big trophy.

TONGLET ADDS ANOTHER PIECE TO RESURGENT SEASON

LE Tonglet knows patience.

For nearly five years, the Louisiana native endured a losing streak in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Pro Stock ranks.

ANDERSON CHASES PERFECTION IN CHICAGO

Greg Anderson figured that he needed a flawless run Saturday to snare the No. 1 Pro Stock qualifying spot for the Route 66 Nationals in Chicago.

The four-time NHRA world champion delivered in style with his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro.

COURTNEY REALIZES THE COLD-HARD NATURE OF A DNQ

Courtney Force admits her emotions overshadowed her ability to maintain her composure.

The Advance Auto Parts-sponsored driver has been a machine of sorts; for 130 consecutive races since she stepped into fuel Funny Car racing. This season was especially impressive; in 12 races she'd qualified No. 1 five times and no lower than fourth.

B. FORCE, HIGHT, ANDERSON & TONGLET SECURE NO. 1 QUALIFIERS AT ROUTE 66 NATIONALS

BRITTANY FORCE FINDS FORMULA FOR SPEED

Brittany Force entered the Route 66 Nationals searching for her first No. 1 NHRA Mello Drag Racing Series qualifier of the season.

Judging from Friday’s performance, Force is on a fast track to reaching that goal.

HIGHT’S PREDICTION COMES TRUE

The fans at the Route 66 Nationals were buzzing Friday night over Robert Hight’s record blast, but Hight was not surprised to set both ends of the track record.

“I called it Thursday at the press conference that track records were going to fall,” Hight said. “This is a great racing surface. “The fans look for those big numbers, and we’re trying to go harder. It’s exciting.”

PRO STOCK TEAM OWNER BELIEVES PERCEPTION IS NOT REALITY

Richard Freeman knows it takes powerful engines to win in Pro Stock, and has the championships to prove it.

On the WFO Radio Show (wforadio.com) with Joe Castello, he made a good case for how to get Pro Stock headed in the right direction during what many have declared a transitional period. Under no circumstances, he believes, is killing the factory hot rod division the answer.

Perception is not always the reality.

ENCORE - BEFORE THE ROUTE 66 STADIUM, THERE WAS US 30

Chicagoland drag racing is much different now than it was back in the 1970s.

A stadium-style facility, built in the late 1990s, plays host to the 13th stop on the 24-race NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series in Joliet, Ill. Up until 1984, a coliseum of sorts, located 30 miles east of Joliet, once served as the host to the nitro gladiators of yesteryear.

Don’t be confused, US 30 Drag Strip in Gary, Indiana was no Route 66 Raceway. However, it served a purpose for hundreds of thousands of drag racing fans in Chicago.
