STEVE MATUSEK OKAY AFTER NHRA J&A SERVICES PRO MOD DRAG RACING SERIES INCIDENT

NHRA J&A Services Pro Mod Drag Racing Series driver Steve Matusek was uninjured after an incident during the first round of eliminations for the category. Matusek’s car went out of control during his run and made contact with the retaining wall near the finish line. Matusek exited the car under his own power and was responsive to commands from Safety Safari.

HAGAN, KALITTA, ANDERSON & M. SMITH SECURE NO. 1 QUALIFIERS SATURDAY AT NORWALK

Matt Hagan powered to his third No. 1 qualifier of the season Saturday at the 11th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park.

Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) are also No. 1 qualifiers in their respective categories at the twelfth of 24 events on the 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.

COUGHLIN EARNS NO. 1 QUALIFYING POSITION; WINS FIRST ROUND OF PRO MOD ELIMINATIONS

Troy Coughlin raced to the No. 1 qualifying position in dramatic fashion and won the first round of competition at the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series portion of the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park. This weekend’s Pro Mod racing, presented by Real Pro Mod Association, is the eighth of 12 events on the 2017 schedule.

Coughlin raced to the qualifying lead in his JEGS.com Chevy Corvette, with his pass of 5.756-seconds at 259.31 mph for his third No. 1 qualifying position of the season. His speed of 259.31 bested the previous record set by Melanie Troxel in 2011.

MICKEY THOMPSON TIRES TO SPONSOR PRO BIKE BATTLE ALL-STAR EVENT

Mickey Thompson Tires has been named the official sponsor of the Pro Bike Battle event held at Sonoma Raceway, NHRA officials announced today. The multi-year agreement will feature the top motorcycle competitors in the country battling for a lucrative purse. 

The Mickey Thompson Tires Pro Bike Battle will take place July 29th during the Toyota NHRA Sonoma Nationals with the eight best riders in the two wheel category. Riders earn points into the specialty event based upon points awarded for final qualifying positions at each Pro Stock Motorcycle event. 

HAGAN SCOOPS UP PROVISIONAL FUNNY CAR LEAD AT NORWALK

The Bader Family knows how to put on a grand show when the NHRA comes to their Norwalk, Ohio, racetrack for the Summit Racing Equipment Nationals, and the most delicious part of their welcome is the $1-per-pound ice cream at the concession stands.

The brand isn’t Häagen-Dazs. But by the end of this weekend, one Funny Car driver from the Don Schumacher Racing organization hopes everyone will be calling it “Hagan Does.”

KALITTA RECLAIMS HIS TOP FUEL TRACK-RECORD E.T. TO ZIP TO THE NO. 1 SPOT

In Friday’s opening Top Fuel qualifying session at the NHRA’s Summit Racing Equipment Nationals, early leader Leah Pritchett was one-thousandth of a second shy of equaling Doug Kalitta’s year-old track elapsed-time record. She led the Norwalk, Ohio, field with a 3.720-second pass on the 1,000-foot course.

The two Alan Johnson-tuned dragsters of Brittany Force (who jumped from 15th after the first session to second) and Steve Torrence came back in the evening session to topple Kalitta’s record at 3.714 and 3.715 seconds, respectively.

SMITH LEADS PRO MOD QUALIFYING FRIDAY AT NORWALK

Rickie Smith continues his successful return to the cockpit by racing to the provisional No. 1 qualifier at the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series portion of the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park. This weekend’s Pro Mod racing, presented by Real Pro Mod Association, is the eighth of 12 events on the 2017 schedule.

Smith, who sat out four races due to back surgery won the event in Englishtown and raced to a 5.821-second pass at 248.80 mph in his ’15 IDG Chevy Camaro. Due to persistent showers in the area the category had only one qualifying session during the day.

This is the sage advice Leah Pritchett received from crew chief Todd Okuhara when Top Fuel driver Steve Torrence tried to lure her into a war of zingers.

Torrence had some good ones, like gold digger, referencing her gold-painted dragster, which could also be construed as a money-hungry female as well as the pizza delivery car.
