CASTELLANA EARNS SECOND CONSECUTIVE NHRA PRO MOD VICTORY

Mike Castellana raced to his second consecutive NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series win Sunday at the Lucas Oil NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway. This week’s Pro Mod Racing, presented by Pro Line Racing and FuelTech, is the fourth of 12 races on the season.

Castellana drove his Al Anabi Racing ’17 Camaro to a 5.776-second pass at 249.21 mph to defeat Steve Jackson on a holeshot after he ran a 5.772 pass at 247.61. Castellana’s reaction time of .025 bettered Jackson’s .052.

Ron Capps raced his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger R/T to his third consecutive Funny Car victory this season Sunday at the 37th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.

Steve Torrence (Top Fuel), Bo Butner (Pro Stock) and LE Tonglet (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also winners in their respective categories at the seventh event of 24 on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing series schedule.

Sunday afternoon, during final eliminations of the Lucas Oil NHRA Southern Nationals veteran Pro Stock driver turned Pro Modified pilot took a ride on the wild side, the kind of pass which was eerily reminiscent of the early days of the class. 

BRAYS BRING THE THUNDER IN SYDNEY

There are few names better known in Australian drag racing than the Bray family. Saturday in Sydney, the father and son Top Doorslammer team of Victor and Ben Bray, both multi-time champions provided a reminder during Sydney Dragway’s Gulf Western Oil Nitro Thunder.

Ben scored the Chicago-style victory in beating defending Thunder 400 champion John Zappia on a holeshot, 5.70 to 5.64. A session earlier the second-gen Bray beat his father in a battle of personal bests, where Victor turned in a 5.86 in his ageless 1957 Chevy.

TOP PRO MOD QUALIFIER CASTELLANA WINS FIRST ROUND SATURDAY AT SOUTHERN NATIONALS

Mike Castellana maintained the qualifying lead and ran the second-quickest elapsed time in NHRA Pro Mod history during eliminations Saturday at the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series portion of the Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway. This weekend’s Pro Mod racing, presented by Pro Line Racing and FuelTech, is the fourth of 12 events this season.

Castellana’s 5.717-second pass at 251.81 mph in his Al Anabi Racing ’17 Camaro during Saturday’s qualifying sessions secured him the No. 1 qualifier. Castellana now owns four of the five quickest runs in Pro Mod racing history. During eliminations, Castellana defeated Kevin Rivenbark with a time of 5.794 at 248.98.
